In 1941 Italy was in the middle of World Second War. Italian Red Cross was present as medical help on entire national area (likewise on colonies and on african, balcanic and russian battlefields), creating military hospitals and other sort of ad-hoc structures, when possible. San Giorgio Military Hospital was one of those extemporary structures, created in the heart of Viale Merello caves, a logistic and prudent alternative for in-patients during airstrikes. Moreover, San Giorgio was the only working military hospital in Cagliari during the acme of war, particularly between february and may 1943 bombings. After the war ended the hospital followed giving its aid to generic diseased, until shutdowns and creation of a permanent Civil Hospital in the city centre. Paradise on Earth by Firstlady Go to Villasimius beach, it's where all the Italians go. Buses leave from Piazza Matteotti in Cagliari and the journey takes about an hour. The road is winding and follows the crystal clear waters of the south Sardinian coast (costa Rei). What a beach. Definately head there if you are in southern Sardinia. Leave a Comment

Take a bus to Pula to see the Roman ruins. Be sure to ask the driver to let you off at Pula because the bus stop is along a highway in the middle of nothing, and from there you have a long walk down deserted country roads before you arrive at Pula. In their sad way, the deserted country roads are nicer than the ruins themselves, which are aswarm with camera snapping Italian tourists and rather over-equipped with litter generating snack concessions. On the return trip, it's easy to get lost looking for the bus back to Cagliari and find yourself on the highway in what looks like Arizona, but there really is a bus stop in the center of the village, and friendly people to tell you where.

If you're tired of the crowd on Poetto, here's a tip for some private sunbathing, pic-nic or whatever you're looking for. It's a bit of an effort to get here, but well worth it. Starting from Marina Piccola, if you walk across the Sella del Diavolo you will find a fantastic small beach on the otherside. Wear good shoes for the walk! Leave a Comment
