Closing Time

by JennysTravels

If you come from a fast food nation or where stores are open 24hrs then you'll be in for shock when you arrive here. In MY town everything is open at 8:30am and closes at 1pm. To reopen again at 5pm and close at 8pm. On wednesday night everything is closed except the butcher. Forget about sundays, nothing is open. I believe that every town has different opening and closing times. In the larger cities you will find large supermarket chains open from 8am-8pm. But most smaller shops take a rest in the afternoon.Just be prepared if you are doing a drive and are on the cheap!!

Regional Food

by PALLINA

Italian food is very regional so although you can find pizza and spaghetti and capuccino everywhere, other things may different a lot from one region to the other. So in Sardinia you can find (at least):1. Pane casarau (it looks like a paper sheet but it's bread, very delicate)2. Porceddu (a maximum 6-weeks little pig, roasted on barbecue)3. Colurgiones (a sort of gnocchi filled with goat cheas and pippermint)4. Mirto liquor both black and white (black one made from the fruit and white one made from the leaves)

Have a quick drink at the bar....

by tini58de

In the cafés/bars you will usually see the locals have their espresso or cappucchino while standing at the bar - this is the way to do it! For a "quick" drink at the bar you pay less than if you have the same drink while sitting at one of the tables. One example: in 2007 a cappucchino cost 90 cents to 1 € when having it at the bar and around 1,30 € when having it served at one of the tables.

Bread

by sourbugger

The Sardinians seem to love their bread, and there are several different types available to buy.I was impressed by the speciality of the central mountain area that is now readily available all aver the island. It is a large round crisp bread, which is very similar to a poppadum. It is perhaps slightly more 'wheaty' and crispy than the india equilvalent. The original reason for producing this stuff was, apparantly, that shepherds could use it to accompany cheese, olives or whatever for several days. Because it is 'twice baked' is has an usually long shelf-life.They are great by themselves, or as a 'starter' when they may have cheeses, olives, and cooked meats added on top. With a sprinking of olive oil........Try the bar on the main square in San Panatelo for such an experience. The bread is widely available, including in a shops at the airports.

A way of being

Old traditions and old principle are still alive in Sardinia. For example, a strong respect and devotion is still hold to old people. Every town has is own traditional dress and it is still common that children wear it the day of the "patrono"(the protector saint ) of their town.
