Sassari Things to Do

  • Trip to Alghero

The narrow guage train goes from Sassari to Alghero and takes about 30 minutes. There is also a bus service.Alghero is a nice seaside resort with an old town c entre. The train station in Alghero is a 20 minutes walk from the sea front. Make sure you take the correct road. Best to ask or take a local bus.

  • Old Quarter

The narrow streets either side of Corso Vittorio Emanuele are worth exploring, mostly very narrow, admire the drivers skill getting their cars around - no way would I attempt it!

  • Duomo di San Nicola

Large Cathedral pretty much hidden in the backstreets, open 9-12 daily so we missed it but still looks good from the outside.

  • Plaza Italia

Large square and a popular Sunday morning meeting place. Statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II in pride of place.

  • Museo Sanna

Large modern museum showing the long history of human occupation of the area, starting from the prehistoric. Lots of artefacts on display, particularly enjoyed the mosaic flooring and small art exhibition. Very good value at €2 entrance fee.

  • Festival of the CAndles - Candeleiri 14...

This has run annually for 400 to 500 years on 14th August, the eve of the Assumption, in thanks for deliverance from a plagueThe nine candles are in fact 8 metre tall coloured wooden columns, painted, decortated, bedecked on ribbons and carrying religious iconography. Nine ancient guilds - farmers, land owners, carpenters, stone pike men, wayfarers,...

  • Fontana di Rosello

Genovese stonemasons created the original Fonte in 1606, unfortunately the four figures -who represent the four seasons - were damaged during civil unrest and the new figures date back 180 years

  • Go to the island on the Costa...

Go to the island on the Costa Smeralda on the north coast of Sardinia - la Madalena. It's a gorgeous place with great shops, outdoor markets and restaurants. A gem! And only a short ferry trip from the coast.

Sassari Restaurants

  • Fainé

Fainé was brought to sassari by traders from Genoa and has remained a favourite since. A little difficult to describe, maybe a cross between a pizza and an omelette with the base made from chick peas, it's really tasty and very filling, did manage to finish our plateful though. This restaurant only has fainé for main course, choose from plain or...

  • Great pizza

Another choice made for us, the nearest restaurant when the rain started and a good place to be. Pizzas were too tempting, plenty of other interesting dishes on the menu too - any pizza with aubergines and mushrooms is for me though. Very good prices added to the attraction, enjoyed our visit.

  • Cafe rather than a restaurant

Handy for the start of the Candelieri festival while you wait in Piazza Castello, seats outside are under cover, if required Serves snacks although we only stopped for a white wine (Eu2) a 500ml German beer (Eu5) and ended up getting a couple of cokes too at Eu2 each. Served at the table

Italian trains run main line services Porto Torres, Sassari, Olbia, Oristanto and Cagliari. There are many small gauge lines that mainly run in summer only. The state run FS is on and the private narrow gauge is In the picture can be seen the narrow gauge track shared with normal line.

Sassari has good rail links to the rest of the island. A half hour journey on the narrow gauge track to Alghero for us, enjoyable.See link to webpage for timetables

  • Bus from Alghero airport

There is a regular bus service from Alghero airport, journey time around 30 minutes and cost is €3.50 (2008 Jan) See link to timetable

Sassari Tourist Traps

  • Take care of false 'red...

Take care of false 'red coral'. Most pieces are good, but a lot of fake may be found. I'd rather avoid thinking the real red coral is from Sardinia: most of it comes from the Chefarines islands, a Spanish enclave, close to Melilla, on the Moroccan northern coast of Mediterranean. Red coral is almost disappeared from Sardinia, due to over capture.

  • The local sellers hounding you...

The local sellers hounding you on the beach with offers of sarongs and other merchandise. Some of it looks nice but the quality of items can be poor and the sellers can be incredibly persistent and quite annoying.

Sometimes you are forced to make rallies to reach the desired destination.
Here we where crossing a river. It may appear fatiguing but the prize is definitely worth the trip!
