Visit San Pantaleo

by anacapa

San Pantaleo is a lovely mountain town. I'd like to move there for a year and paint. The rock formations surrounding the town look like they'd be amazing to climb. I don't know how stable they are.We made a stop here and bought cheese, meat, bread and wine for a picnic later in the day. I recommend a visit or better yet, a stay here. I'd love to go back. The area is known for it's artist community. We didn't have time to check this out.

Ferry to Isla Maddalena

by anacapa

It's a short and beautiful ferry ride to La Maddalena on the island and worth the trip/effort. The island has an american base on it and is bustling. We found many things closed on Sardinia because we were one week early, before the season opened. Whereas, on Isla Maddalena, everything was open and the place was bustling. The weather was beautiful too.The hostel we stayed at wasn't so nice though. I have no recommendations of where to stay. There were some lovely forelorn places on the island. It's best to have a four wheel drive should you want to explore.

Baia Chia / Capo Sportivento

by MichaelFalk1969

A beautiful stretch of the southern Sardinian coast with an easy and rewarding coastal hike (about 5 hours incl. return). It is not marked, basically you walk more or less parallel to the coast as long as possible. The hike starts at the Torre di Chia, is for the most part flat, until you reach a cobble-stone road leading to a little plateau with a great view on the mediterranean sea. Long trousers are recommended because of the thorny bushes.

Muravera: Murales

by MichaelFalk1969

Though Muravera is a rather dull town on the southeastern coast of Sardinia, it has hidden attractions: The "murales", wall paintings with diverse themes, some cartoon-like, others depicting scenes from sardinian country life or history. Apart from that, Muravera is the perfect base to explore the beaches of the Costa Rei - and it has a few excellent restaurants, too!

Beaches!

by MichaelFalk1969

Sardinia has caribbean-like unspoilt beaches with turquoise water - I hope they stay this way! The best beaches are in the southeastern part of Sardinia (especially the Costa Rei). I especially liked that in the southeast there are usually no big hotel buildings ruining the beach panorama.

Cagliari

by tini58de

We based ourselves in Cagliari, which turned out to be the right decision considering the season: in February there is not much tourism in Sardegna, so being stuck in a holiday resort in the off season is not much fun! Cagliari, on the contrary, has enough culture throughout the year to keep a tourist busy: great architecture, stunning views, nice museums and trains and buses to discover the surroundings! For more information, do have a look at my Cagliari page

Across the rocky coast of Gallura

by davide1956

The amazing "Gallura" landscape , a polyedric caleiscope of colours, can be easily realized by seeing the below photo . Stones, sand, grass, cristal seethrough water, wonderful sky and clean windy air....this is the recipe for a wonderful stay in the nature.

Nuraghi

by MichaelFalk1969

Ancient stone settlements from a mysterious pre-roman sardinian people ... Sardinia is dotted with "nuraghi": Some of the best preserved sites are the Su Nuraxi and the Su Arrubiu nuraghi (near Orroli, East Sardinia).

The tombs of the giants..

by sourbugger

The area around Arzachena (not far from the Costa Smerelda and Olbia) has many ancient sites to visit. Most cost just a few euro to visit, and you can buy a kind of 'multiple ticket book'.We visited the 'Coddu Vecchiu' or Giant's Tomb which originally had an earth mound covering it. It is quite a dramatic site, set on a small hillside with vineyards beyond. The entrance has a carved stone slab, a horizontal lintel, and an arch above; a small opening at the base was blocked by a stone. They ask you not to enter, but you just about poke your head in. Built from 2300 BC onwards, they were mass burial rooms. Although the photograph may seem to look like the size of Stonehenge, the entrance stone is only about 12 feet high - still I would not want to shift it without the help of a group of mates and the promise of vast quantites of beer as a reward afterwards.

Caprera - Garibaldi's grave

by sourbugger

Garibaldi, apart from giving the world a rather terrific biscuit was, perhaps, the most pre-eminant name in Italian History. It is therefore a rather sad reflection that when you put 'Garibaldi's tomb' into google, it returns with 'Did you mean Garfield's tomb ?'The family farmhouse (covered in the tip above) has become a major spot to visit in Sardinia, and as you leave the 'white house' you are directed out on a path that leads to the family buriak plot, and finally Garibald's boat.Garibaldi's grave itself is a rather understated affair, being a piece of seemingly uncut granite. I think the 'natural' look says something about the man himself. The rather more formal toombs to either side belong to his wife and children, some of whom died tragically young.
