Cagliari Elmas airport

by tini58de

There are three airports in Sardegna: Cagliari-Elmas the largest, Olbia-Costa Smeralda and the very small Alghero-Fertilia.Cagliari airport Elmas is conveniently located just 10 minutes drive from the city center. Since it is so close to the city you have a spectacular and little frightening view of the city while getting ready to land! It looks sooooooooo close (and in fact, it is)!!!We arrived there from Stuttgart on tuifly, formerly HLX and hapagfly. The airport was first opened in 1937, but recently renovated and has a very modern apparence. There is a shuttle bus to Cagliari central bus station every 30 minutes, the fare is 2 €. You do have to obtain the tickets before getting on the bus. In Cagliari this is at the ticket counter of the central bus station, but since we were picked up at the airport in Cagliari, I do not know where to get the tickets there. I did read something about...

Train journeys

by sourbugger

There are a number of differeing netwoks on the Island, and it is possible to travel by train from Olbia all the way through to Caligari. Around the old town of Sassari there are a number of branch lines. On the whole, however, Sardinian railways are a neglected backwater of the FS network with old running stock and timetables that are erratic at the best of times.

Ferry to La Maddelena

by sourbugger

A very popular day trip from the Island of Sardinia is to visit the much smalled island of La Maddalena. The charming town is attraction enough, although Garibaldi's house and the nature reserve all deserve some time. The ferries are run by three different companies, with two companies arranging their timetables for a frequent 15 minute service throughout the day. Another company offers an hourly service during the wee small hours.Reckon on about 17-18 euro return with car, if you just turn up, although if you Italian is up to it, you may be able to get a cheaper deal through using the websites of one of the comapanies. The short crossing obly takes about 15 minutes, and although very scenic, many don't even bother to get out of their cars for the journey. Indeed if they are really cramming the cars in tight, your only option to get out of your car maybe through the sunroof !

motorcycle

by Fabanna

In La Maddalena you definitely need to rent a motorcycle or a mountain bike. It is very important if you want to see the island, although bus services exist you will be more independent in this way. There are many places where you can rent a motorcycle, and it is not erxpensive at all if you consider all the trips you can make. We calculated around 600kms in one week!!

Ryan Air

If you're thinking about making the trip you should definitely keep your eyes peeled on Ryan Air's web site. I was able to get two round trip tickets over four days for less than $70 from Frankfurt. It's an incredible bargain.

Ferries leave for La Maddalena...

by gabriellefox

Ferries leave for La Maddalena from Piazza del Molo in Palau several times a day, although you may have to wait for a second one in August. One ferry a day leaves from Via Porto in S. Teresa di Gallura, where you can also catch a ferry for Corsica.

If you fly into Olbia, rent a car at the airport. Or take your car on the ferry to Golfo Aranci. Sardinia is a place for drivers: the public transportation is dismal, unreliable and SLOW. However you get to the island, have a car and drive it north, following the frequent signs marked 'Costa Smeralda.'Picture by artist Bill Robson http://billrobson.org/italypaintings1.htm
