Get a Hair Cut Or Shoeshine: Go For a Service Purchase

by RoscoeGregg

Italians are often very service oriented. By purchasing services you are in for a very nice slice of Italian life and you will have the best souviner of all a great memory. My best friend got a hair cut on a lark on her first trip to Italy. To say she loved it would be an understatement. She looks forward to it on every trip she takes.I like to have my shoes shined. I have had some of my best conversations with Italians while patronizing a shoe shine stand. About the same as at home

Bardolino wines: In vino veritas

by croisbeauty

Put at least one bottle of Italian wine in your bag on the way back home. Let it remind you on a great holidays you had, seating on the terrace, listening to murmur of the waves and sipping a glass of wine in the twilight. My suggestion is, light red wines from the northern part of the country. "Chiaretto" from Bardolino, area of Lago di Garda, is not bad choice.

San Daniele: Prosciutto crudo

by croisbeauty

They say San Daniele is the best prosciutto (smoked ham) that exist, perhaps it is truth but I don't share that opinion. It is the metter of taste, to me the best is prosciutto from nearby Istria region. In any case, Italian proscitto, especially the one from San Daniele nearby Udine, is of superb quality. Do not regret to spend some money on it and bring it to your home because you'll have great Christmas time eating it in that ocassion.

Barolo: The king of red wines

by croisbeauty

Those of you who are lovers of superb quality wines should taste "Barolo", the king of Italian red wines. It is originated from Tuscany which is home of Barolo, but there are also overstanding quality Barolo's coming from Piedmont too. I prefer Barolo from Piedmont which is more secco (dry).Barolo is very expensive wine but woth all money you spend on it. If you buy it in the wineyards, it cost from 20 to 40 euros for a bottle, in the wine shops however, Barolo from Montalcino, which is the best, cost from 30 up to 150 euros.

Marina Rinaldi - what a gorgeous desinger!

by Trekki

I am not very much into clothes shopping. Quite contrary, I seriously hate it and I must be in a very very good mood to do it. But recently I found out that this habit must have developed in context to the lousy attitude of clothes shop staff, which usually can’t be bothered with anything that has to do with customer attention (which is an almost general German thing though...).My love affair with this brand started already back in Germany without knowing that a love affair has started. I saw an advertisement in a magazine and liked the style of the sweater. Then I looked up the name of the brand and realised that – of course – it is an Italian brand. And when I was in Reggio nell’Emilia for a brief stopover on the way down to Gubbio in May 2010, I was delighted to hear that the biggest Marina Rinaldi shop is right there because Reggio is home to this brand and the one of Max Mara (the...

Truffle and produces heaven

by Trekki

Truffles, already the name sounds like music in our ears, doesn’t it? Italia's region Umbria accounts for 80% of Italy’s truffle “production”; well truffle find is the better term. The other region in Italia with high truffle “density” is Piemonte. I have read that 8 black and 2 white truffle varieties are native to Umbria, mostly in the hills above 300 m. Unlike in other countries, Umbria’s truffle hunters work with dogs and not with pigs. They claim that the pigs would rumple the ground too much which might reduce the chances that new truffles would grow at the old places. There was even a truffle dog university in Roddi, Piemonte, but it had to close in 1960 when the founder’s family didn’t want to continue the founds. Throughout the whole year, you can find truffle dishes on Umbria’s restaurant menus and I also tried some while I was there. It was even the first time that I tried...

The best olive oil comes from Italy

by Trekki

When you travel through the hills anywhere in middle Italia (especially in Umbria and Toscana), you will always be surrounded by olive trees. Even if you look at this part of Italia on Google Earth you will see olive groves all over the region (my screenshot in photo 2). Oilve oil is certainly Italia’s or Umbria’s and Toscana's liquid green gold. You can buy it almost everywhere in Bevagna, Montefalco, Trevi, Spello, Assisi and many more of the villages here or directly at one of the manufacturers. Trevi is most probably the best source. On Slow Travel’s website is a good article of what to consider before buying olive oil and it also explains places to buy it (it is a combination of Toscana and Umbria places).Very important however is to look for the labels:D.O.C. = denominazione di origine controllata (denomination of/with controlled origin), and even higher isD.O.C.G. = denominazione...

Italia's red gold, wine - Sagrantino :-)

by Trekki

Everyone knows the famous names of Italian red wines like Barolo and Barbaresco (Piemonte), Bardolino (Veneto) and Brunello, Montepulciano and Chianti (Toscana). But then there is another very delicious wine which is called Sagrantino. This one is so famous that there is even a special website devoted to this wine:La Strada del Sagrantino. If you look at this website (where it says enter) you can see that Sagrantino grapes are mostly found around Bevagna and Montefalco. The history of these grapes is quite interesting, although it is not yet clear where they were brought from. But they date back to the 16th century and the wine was mostly made and drunk my the monks, thus the name Sagrantino, which is believed to have its origin in “sacrament”. Montefalco’s Sagrantino received the D.O.C.G. in 1992 and is thus the 12th Italian wine with this quality label. It is difficult to name or pick...

Namsce Bazar: handbags

by margaretvn

This tiny little shop/studio is wonderful. The husband and wife team work there everyday and they let you wander round the studio looking at the handbags, wallets etc. They make to most beautiful leather goods. I first saw them in 2001 when I was tempted to buy.... but I had bought so much during our trip I resisted their lovely bags. This time though Koos treated me to a lovely bag for my birthday. a handbag around 100 euros

Shopping hours in Italia (roughly), VAT etc

by Trekki

Italia is a shopping paradise. That’s not only for the most delicious food and produces but also for clothing and shoes, which the country is famous for. But then, designer clothes have their prices. Add the Firenze (or Florence) and Venezia “factor” and prices will increase even more. But there are enough smaller shops in the lesser known cities and regions where prices are moderate. In any cases, after shopping anything, always keep your bill or receipt with you because otherwise it means to be fined heavily and there is no mercy with the tourists. Regarding opening hours: the rule is that there is no rule, especially in the touristic centres and at the beach regions. As a rule of thumb most shops are open Monday to Friday from morning (earliest 8:30, latest 10:00) to noon (12:30 or 13:00) and then again in the afternoon (earliest 15:30, latest 17:00) until approx. 19:00 or 20:00. Many...
