Where to shop for glass in Venezia

by Trekki

Not all glass products which are being sold in Venezia are made in Murano. Too much is out there which is the usual cheap Chinese faked crap that will break sooner than wanted. Of course Murano made glass is not cheap, at least not as cheap as this counterfeited crap. The best Murano made products are being sold on Murano island of course. The island is easily accessible by Vaporetto line no. 41/42 from Fondamenta Nuove (in northern Canaregio). Murano has an excellent glass museum, Museo del Vetro, which gives a rough idea of the typical designs and techniques which were invented on the island and which stand for Made in Murano. But also with a little common sense it is very easy to find shops in Venezia which sell Murano made glass. But then, these are not on Ponte di Rialto of course. I found a shop very close to Piazza San Marco with beautiful artwork. First my attention was drawn by...

Mirto and Limoncello, delicious liquids

by Trekki

Italia is not only famous for some of the best wines on the planet but also for special liqueurs. These two liqueurs should not be missed while in Italia, or to be precise in Sardegna (Mirto) and Campania and Sicilia (Limoncello). When I was on Sardegna and had a delicious crispy pizza napoletana (the one with capers and anchovis, and this one had a lot of anchovis) we were offered a digestif (digestivo in Italian) and gladly accepted it. What came was an ice cold little glass with a high viscosity dark red liquid inside and when I took a sip it was like heaven: it is bitter yes, a bit like Sicilia’s famous Averna, but then it is sweet from the mirto berries. Mirto di Sardegna is available in two flavours: Mirto Rosso (red, only the berries are used) and in Mirto Bianco (white, from mirto leaves and blossoms). When I was on Sardegna (1997) we mostly drank the one of Zeddar Piras, but...

Signor Blum, finest wood art (Venezia)

by Trekki

A big big big thanks to Christine for introducing me to Signor Blum through her Venezia page! When you enter this little shop it is amazing to see how many different puzzles and small gifts they have! All is woodwork, the art ranges from small pieces such as fridge magnets to little gondole, wooden boxes with Venezia motifs (such as gondole or carneval masks), mobiles and much more, and all very much colourful painted. By the way: the paint is eco friendly and non-toxic. They also have bigger wood paintings, but these are done in a puzzle style. And they have wooden painting sets, where 3 or more single ones build one “picture”. Signor Blum’s motifs are Venezia of course, like gondole, carneval, Venezia scenes and contemporary scenes (mediterranean, animals, desert, tropic). In addition, depending on the time of year, also holiday related themes are sold, such as Valentine’s Day and...

Beautiful watercolours (Venezia)

by Trekki

I already saw these shops (it is two of them) on my very first evening in Venezia and liked their exhibits. And since I passed it quite often during my stay in the city, I finally bought some gifts. The artist, Monica Martin of Jesolo, is making beautiful watercolour paintings in all different sizes. The themes range from typical Veneziano sights, like of course gondole, the most famous palazzi, such as Ca’d’Oro and of course, Basilica di San Marco, to more colourful steet scenes. The affordable paintings are reprints of her original artwork, which is also available, but of course, at a much higher price. Her website lists the different artwork, according to themes. As far as I could see, the smallest printings (reprints) can be only bought framed (wooden frame, in colours red, orange or blue), but the bigger ones are also sold without frame.I bought some of the smaller reprints (14 x 9...

Best sausages are from Norcia (Umbria)

by Trekki

Norcia is Italia's capital for the best and most delicious sausages. This dates back deep into the Medieval times, when the people of this region were already making good sausages from pork and wild boar. But being innovative, they worked on the recipes in winter and improved quality and taste. This was the time when they started to travel all over Italy and sell their products. The sausages became so famous, everyone wanted to have them, and eventually many of the butchers Italywide were renamed “Norcini”. Nowadays, Norcini not only use pork meat but also wild boar meat, and have experimented even more with spices and other delicious ingredients. And of course it depends on what the wild boar finds to eat. Given the many oak trees in Norcia's surroundings, they feed a lot on acorns. I can testify that the wild boar ones are very excellent and I am really looking forward to my next trip...

Fabriano, finest paper art (Marche)

by Trekki

Fabriano, sadly a rather unknown town in western Marche, is THE place to buy finest paper and paper art. The best selection can definitely be found in Museo della Carta e della Filigrana, that's where the history of watermark invention is displayed and shown. I could have bought everything… But I liked these little booklets in my main photo most: it has a size of 5x4 cm (and 2 cm thick) and is a model of a book with leather cover, a little string to “close” the book and a magnificent decoration on the cover: letters, made with the technique of old book lettering. But they also have bookmarks, and little books (10x14 cm, each with a different kind of paper inside), albums, writing sets and much more.Have a look at the paper museum’s website. Check their site map for links to the product groups, listed under “shopping”. When I was in Fabriano (April 2008), a group of young artists had a...

Grappa!

by Maurizioago

Grappa is a grape based spirit of between 40% and 60% alcohol by volume. It is made from the distillation of pomace (= the residue of grapes) that were pressed from the winemaking process. Bassano del Grappa (a town not far from Venice) is well known for the production of this spirit. There is an old bar there where you can buy and taste various kinds of grappa. This bar stands at the end of the bridge (it is the highlight of Bassano). Its name is Nardini.

Can't remember the name of the shop: Shopping for olive oils in Chianciano Terme

by hopang

Italy produces high quality and fine olive oils. One of the most popular brands of high quality olive oils produced in Italy is Olio Extra Vergine di Oliva. We cannot remember the name of the shop dealing in olive oils and the olive products. The shop is located at Viale della Liberta approximately half way between Piazza Italia and the Old Town in the heart of the city of Chianciano Terme. We believe it is the only shop at Viale della Liberta dealing in olive oil and the olive products. Prices of the high quality olive oils sold in the shop are certainly affordable and reasonable. Take the opportunity to purchase some high quality Italian olive oils and the olive products when you are having a spa vacation at Chianciano Terme! Olive oil "Olio Extra Vergine di Oliva". Prices are slightly cheaper than those in the supermarkets and other outlets, but you have wide varieties of olive...
