Markets: Outdoor Markets

by kazander

many Italian cities and towns have outdoor markets. From the giant market in Florence at San Lorenzo to the little Wednesday market that was held just outside of tiny coastal town of Pisciotta, there are deals and treasures to be found. Bargaining is expected to a degree, but it's not quite as draining as say bargaining in Tunisia. The markets can hold all types of wares such a leather goods (florence) clothing, paper goods, glassware, and even fresh fruit or antiques! As much as you want really, shop around the different stalls to find a good deal

hmm.. there was nearly everything..: where to shop..?

by Toja

where to shop..? well.. how about the duty free zone? ;-) oh, anything you need... After all I didn't buy anything, but was observing others.. hmm.. some people really enjoyed this part of the trip ;-) all your money ;-D

can't remember...: wooden... anything?

by Toja

there was a wooden motorbike displayed in the shop window.. and inside.. one could find almost anything there was also a picture of a car which was made of wood.. wonder if it could move... mostly toys, stationery things, clocks, little gadgets.. wooden bikes, armours, blocks.. but don't expect any traditional designs.. those were very cute but modern things. For traditional stuff I'd rather go to Slovakia, Czech Republic or even to Poland oh, it is totally up to you :-)

Nove and Deruta: Italian Ceramics (Ceramica)

by sargentjeff

It's probably no surprise to see a tip on Italian ceramics, as you probably know that Italy is famous for this. What may surprise you is that some of the more well known companies, Lenox for one, have their ware made in Italy. Nove, in the Veneto Region, is a small town, but produces some of the best ceramics in the country. Nove also has a museum dedicated to ceramics. You can purchase a set of fine dishes, as well as special pieces for the holidays in Nove.Further south, in Umbria, lies Deruta, a city well known in that part of Italy for producing fine Ceramics. The town is also a pleasure to stroll through and watch the craftsmen at work in their shops.

?: Porketta anyone?

You can walk into a shop in Riomaggiore and cut flesh off a bar-b-qued pig and pay for it by weight. It might gross some people out but I found it quite unique. Fresh fruit and vegetables, yummy cheese and bread not too mcuh

My favorites: Ferragamo and Dolce e Gabbana: Made-in-Italia Leather Goods

by Krystynn

Buy Made-in-Italia leather goods like handbags and shoes et al. I just can't sing enough praises about their soft leather boots to handbags (especially those from Dolce e Gabbana and Salvatore Ferragamo).... which you can buy in big cities like Roma, Firenze, Venezia and Milano. If you're worried about the price, then I'll advise you to wait till their twice-yearly big sale. Italian leather is the best in the world. Don't worry, none of these Italian designers paid me to write this down although I sure wish they did! ;-p Prices will then be slashed to less than 50% (on some products). $$$$$$$ - if you buy in these big boutiques. If you're willing to wait till the twice-yearly big sale in Italy, you might get some of these leather shoes and bags at a steal! Sometimes as cheap as US$100 for a branded pair of shoes (if you're lucky and quick enough...!). Is that incentive enough to wait...

Any shops selling Murano glasswares in Venice: Quanto Hai Pagato Quel MURANO?

by Krystynn

Venetian glass is famous the world over. However, they don't come cheap. But they are a good investment! Murano, an island located near Venice, is still regarded as being synonymous with the production of the finest and most elegant glasswares..... and they are often referred to as “cristallo” i.e. a brilliant, colorless glass made from imported sand containing silica and soda purified from plant ash. The recipe for making cristallo was a closely guarded secret for centuries. So, don't bribe the local Murano man into revealing his secrets! Si? For the avid Murano glassware collector, you can buy these Murano-made Venetian glasses in Venice. Expect to pay at least US$500 and above for a tiny tea cup set. What's so good about these glasswares?I think Franklin Mall's The History of Murano Glassmaking has the best explanation, in my humble opinion. Yes, I am also a regular customer of...

Dolce e Gabbana, Gucci, Armani, Versace, Cavalli..: Per la Regina di Alta Moda

by Krystynn

This tip is strictly for the self-confessed Queen of High Fashion (as the title aptly states) and the chic fashionistas. I am sure the following names will not sound foreign to you....- Roberto Cavalli- Dolce e Gabbana- Emilio Pucci- Gianni Versace- Giorgio Armani- MissoniNote: Please click onto the links above and it'll bring you to each of these designer's official websites. Have fun! Heck, I'll probably score 100% distinction if there's an exam on Italian 'Moda' (Fashion) and Designers. :-) Let's put it this way: the French designers used to reign supreme in the fashion world but not any more! They have surrendered this prestigious crown to the Italian designers.Nobody can design outfits better than the likes of Armani, Dolce e Gabbana, Cavalli and gang. These designers treat each fabric like a work of art - yes, like how Michelangelo would sculpt his "David" masterpiece....

WINE; drinking it and getting it home

by nancy_1447

Prices are fantasitc, wine is first class anywhere. If you want Chianti or Spumanti you need to buy it in the region it is produced in. Tuscan wine is sold in Tuscany, etc. We bought it in boxes of 3. The grocer put it in a cardboard box with handle for no extra charge, always buy more than you think you'll need, we dipped into some before we left. If you are purchasing at a wine shop ask the merchant to open it for you if you are going to have it with lunch. It was delicious, even the bottles for $6.00.Pottery in Siena of course. Shoes in Milan if you can stand the current style which may be strange. Cashmere and Linen in Milan at Outlet stores, very good price.Spas-this is the country, anywhere you see the word "Terme" they are volcanic mineral waters, check it out. Wine can range from 4.50 to 50.00pottery was 20.00 - unlimited.Spas were $60 for a facial, $100 for massage and baths.

shoeshop: Shoes...

by nighthawk

Seems Italy is know for it s shoes as I was told by Geisha_Girl....however in Manerba just a small local shop only sold shoes that weren t all in fashion no more ... I fear we d better gone to one of the bigger cities like Milan.
