Milan Shopping District

by andreaarp

Well there wasn't one shop in general that I thought was so great. But I learned that all the fun, trendy, affordable shops in Milan were located on side streets outside the main shoppin district in Milan. I tortured myself walking past Gucci, Versace, and Hugo and looked in all the windows, wanted everything but could afford nothing. Then as all the stores were about to close in one hour we discovered all the cool shops on the side streets. If you are on a budget look on the side streets. Milan is famous for their fun shirts and sassy shoes. If you do go to Milan make sure you bring lots of spending money for clothes because you will regret not getting something from one of the fashion capitals of the world... Also leave space in your luggage. I didn't and almost had to ditch stuff at the airport because my suitcase was about to explode! The main shopping district clothes ran from...

I said this lady couldn't hold a candle to you

by iandsmith

There we were, wandering the streets inside the walls of San Marino when we noticed much colour and sensed an odour. Well, several odours really. This was a candle shop that reeked of wax but many other fragrances vied for one's olfactory senses.Unlike the cameo shops, this lady was actually making the stuff on the premisesEntranced as we were our feet slid inside the shop and its wonders were many. We cheerfully spent 20 minutes in there (and some money, though not so cheerfully) admiring the variety of works on display. If you're looking for something different, even if you have some candles already, I will guarantee this shop has stuff you've never seen before. Ideal place to find a gift for someone special, particularly if they're already stocked up with basic presents. As much as you want to spend. They have a broad range of items and prices.

Positano: Women's clothing

by iandsmith

We were told by an American couple that we met in a trattoria one night that Positano had different fashions than most other places in Italy as it was catering for a mainly American market (they got the last bit right!).Now, not being an expert in this field you'll have to take my word for it but my partner toddled off the next day and agreed with the above. One thing I can tell you is that the closer you get to the water in Positano, the dearer things seem to become but, hey, you can always window shop. Probably more than some other places, certainly dearer than Naples.

Peruzzi - Santa Croce Leather Factory: Florence for Leather

by Goner

A rather classy store. All the goods are nicely displayed and everyone was very helpful. We received a discount for being on a Cosmos tour and I'm sure the tour guide gets a percentage on what we bought. Leather coats, gloves, belts and purses. The purses are gorgeous and the coats come in many beautiful colors. Around $200 USD for a jacket.

"Flea"market of Trastevere: Big market in Rome

by banzqu

The biggest "fleamarket" in Rome, open on Sunday mornings in Trastevere(sp?), by the river, some ~3 km south of Vatican. Along this marketroad there are many kilometres of marketbooths. Opens kinda early, better to go before 10AM, at 11AM it is more than crowded :)(Some sold stuff is old there, but most of the items sold are all new.)Watch out for pickpockets. Shoes, clothes, toys, CDs, books, kitch, souvenirs, etc etc etc 1e-1000e ;) (like, real leather boots ~10-20e)

Dalla Olga Merletti d'Arte: Burano for Lace

by Goner

My favorite shopping was on the isle of Burano. It was there I made my most expensive purchase - because it was handmade locally. I had read about the Burano's exquite lace but didn't buy any the first time I was in Venice, so this time I wasn't leaving empty handed. I purchased a round table top piece, 18" across, the largest I could afford. Expect to spend at least $100 for the size I purchased. Larger pieces sell for as much as $1,000 USD.

Glass Factory - Vetrerie - Hornaza: Venice for Murano Glass

by Goner

This is more than a shop, it's a large store with a varied assortment of Italian crafts. Besides the Venetian glass, there are also paintings, pieces of Burano lace, locally made pottery and other assorted crafts. There is a free glass blowing demonstration that is quite fascinating to watch -- they do like to be tipped for their work. There are beautiful wine glasses, some VERY ornate and some with simple elegant patterns. Glass sculptures range from very small to a very imposing size, all are colorful and dramatic. An inexpensive choice for a take-home souvenior is a medallion and there are no two alike. You can pay very high prices for the larger pieces, but for $15 you can buy a small souvenior.

Shop 'til you drop

by acemj

In most of Italy, shops stay open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., however in most tourist areas they stay open all day (roughly 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.). One of the major Italian department stores that I visited is called Coin and is a good option if you want to find a variety of goods in one place (of course, you can do that anywhere, so what's the point?). Italians are world-famous for their high fashion and sense of style (with Milan as the Paris or New York of Italian fashion). Designers such as Armani and Gucci are Italian legends and you'll notice that the locals are extremely aware of looking good. You can find good deals on clothes, leather goods and glass to name a few.

Buy anything Italian here.

by Maggies

If you want to buy Italian designers stuff like Prada or Versace, do it in Italy. It won't be fake and it will have the best price here. Also, go for world famous Italian shoes.
