The staircase of Santa Maria del Monte is the main landmark of Caltagirone, there are exactly 142 steps and each one is decorated with different hand-decorated ceramics. If I am the cheaf of Caltagirone would call all inhabitants to stand on the staircase fulfilling it from the bottom till its top. It could be imemorable picture.
Once in a year, as I was told, the staricase is decorated by the flowers in ocasion of some local holiday.

Favorite thing: Caltagirone is situated in the valley called Val di Noto along with seven other small towns known for its exceptional Baroque architecture. It is protected by the UNESCO world heritage program.
Besides its Baroque architecture, Caltagirone is long famous for the production of pottery, particularly maiolica and terra-cotta wares. There isn't much of industry in Val di Noto, the valley is mainly related to agriculture, production of grapes, olives and peaches.

Fondest memory: The name of the town derives from the Arabic Qal'at-al-Ghiran, "hills of vases", it used to be the Arabic strongold during medieval times.
The town was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1693. Many public and private buildings have been reconstructed in Baroque style.

Favorite thing: See the set of 142 ceramic steps connecting the lower and upper part of town. Each of the steps is decorated with hand-painted ceramics and no two of them are the same!
