Walk to Castelmola from Taormina (1.3km)
From Porta Catania take Via Apollo Arcageta and on the left is the church of San Francesco di Paola, originally the Cathedral of Taormina. Continuing upwards take the ancient (Strada Comunale della Chiusa) that has joined Taormina and Castelmola since prehistoric times. From here there are atmospheric sunsets over Etna and wonderful views of the coast and at the end of the climb the reward of the most amazing 360 degree panoramic views which explains why this ancient fortress was built to protect Taormina.
Take a well deserved break and enjoy a scenic lunch or a drink in one of the bars before returning via the ancient stairway-muletrack described in 'off the beaten path'.

Take the bus to Taormina! First stop tourist Information Office (in the museum forecourt next to the church)and get a map. Follow the tourist route to all the main sites such as the ampitheatre and square but check out the beautiful public gardens with panoramic view

The station at ground level of the cable car and some restaurants in the same resort had to quickly improvise some walls to contain the lava as they where on its way (see picture). The lava wave stopped only 3 kms. away from the first vilage.

One of the main atractives is visiting Mount Etna. You reach the highest acceptable point according to safety conditions by bus that links the origin of the old funicular that was climbing from approx. 2000 mts. to 3000. Trekking is also possible but not advisable if the day is hot. On the photo a crater on the way up to Etna.

The arena!
It is just beautiful, like you can see on the left!Behind the arena you can also see the vulcano Etna, I was talking about earlier! And also on the stage my friend Ziga is playing a violine-he is one of the best in the world, and it was really a nice site!

The island Stromboli!
The only thing unique about this island is the smell of rotten eggs! I'm just kidding, but the smell is definitely there, because of all the vulcano eruptions, anyway it is supposed to be very healing and a lot of people were bathing in this very stinky and brown pool! So me and the guys you can see on the left had a bath in the smelly lake you can see behind them and we certainly didn't regret it. You must try it, if you're there! It's relly quite an interesting experience! The only problem was, that we stunk all day-as long as we had a shower before the night party and it was fine!

The castle in Taormina!
I guess the view from the top of the hill, was just amazing and you can see just part of it on the picture, but you must be there to experience this beauty!

An exotic spot in the heart of Catania? Yes,it is a shop called Geko.
Just by looking at the shop window you can see some unusual objects with showy colours, with the most varied forms for different uses: a fascinating place where you can emerge yourself in distant worlds.
Art and craftwork are an indissoluble couple at Geko's

Home- Museum 'Giovanni Verga'
This is the house where the writer lived for the most part of his life. Inside this nineteenth-century building you can feel the suggestive atmosphere of Catania in the last century; passing through the rooms previously occupied by the family of Giovanni Verga: the hall, the drawing room, the library, two bedrooms, a parlour and the dining room linked to the kitchen on the upper floor thanks to the service lift. All the rooms have the original furniture, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, books, dresses, etc. Everything reminds you of the writer and of his friends and relatives and of his daily life.

Castello Ursino - was built in 1239 - 1250 from the will of Federico II. The building was destroyed by eruption in 1669 and by earthquake in 1693 and 1818. This port was reconstructed and then become the prison. Today we can find inside the beautiful exposition which covers regional decorations and famos statues (several made also from lava-stone).
