swimming at carla rossa

Carla Rossa is a bay on the island of Favignana. It is very well known and very popular not only with the locals on the island but day-trippers from Marsala and Trapani. There is nothing there except blue water and dramatic cliffs. You can access the bay from land but why would you, as it involves a hot and dusty drive with a great swim at the end and a hot and dusty return trip.

Hire boats are available from Sea taxi a local business with boats ready to use on both the north and south sides of the island. This is loads of fun if you take a picnic and a few friends.

The Favignana garbage collector

This is the garbage collector on the island of Favignana. He is a big man and he drives around in this very small vehicle. I was torn as to if this is something to see or a warning or danger. Should you visit Favignana …. well he is a mute, and has on occasions he has screamed at the odd tourists much to the amusement of the fishermen but he is in fact quite harmless.

See a real fish market

Have you ever been to a fish market? Not like this you haven’t, this is hand to mouth stuff. On the island of Favignana the locals can see easily any boats coming in and out of the port. In the morning when the boats are returning from the deep blue sea, the locals will stroll down to the port and check out what has been caught. The fish are taken from the net and placed on a tray and sold within an hour or two, no ice or refrigeration necessary. This may not seem that exciting to many but it is to me, and I will tell you why.

I have chosen this photograph carefully out of over three thousand photographs I took from my last trip here. If you take a minute and look at the faces of these people looking at the fish you may start to understand what is happening here. This is not about what fish to buy or if you are in the market to purchase one of these fish. This is a community looking at change, assessing a situation on both a local economic and global scale. Things are changing in this world and the people in the banks and bureaucratic departments will always be the last to know about it. So, on the front line where only observations can be made, real people are noticing that the catch is smaller and fewer.

Find a Gozzo

A Gozzo is a Barca, a Barca is a boat and the boats on Favignana are beautiful. Generation to generation these boats are handed down along with their colors and names. They are big and yet look small. They are some of the most beautiful and practical things you will ever see. Who first had the idea to make a working tool attractive?

Strolling the streets of this small town is very pleasant and there is beauty to be found everywhere. Like this small window. It might not be the most exciting thing to do tip but I love to do it.
