PIZZA AND FIREWORKS
At the base of the volcano near the observation post has to be the pizzaria with one of the best views in Europe. Arrive around sunset and sit in the restaurant, order some excellent Italian food and let yourself be captivated by the natural volcanic firework display. The volcano errupts around every 10 minutes, sometimes its more spectacular, sometimes a quick flash. Make sure you have a good torch to get back down the path into town (takes around 30 minutes) into town but turn it off to enjoy the stars. If you forget a torch the restaurant sells them!
Around the harbour area you will find lots of palm fringed cafés where its great to get a typcial Italian breakfast of milky coffee and cornetti con crema (vanilla filled croissants). The sign at the harbour warning visitors they are on an active volcanic island is a great photo opportunity.
For sandwiches and other food try the small shops around the tiny streets and near the beaches.
Bar Malandrino: The only restaurant open in the island
I was lucky to find that bar where I ate pizza and a beer. There were very few restaurants in the island and in the night only the Malandrino offered food.
