There are regular boats several times a day from Palermo to Ustica. The journey takes a bit more than an hour. It is well worth the escape, and enables a combination of visiting Sicily and relaxing away from the crowds (+diving).

This dive operator had a very friendly family feel, and I was fortunate enough to go just with DM Leonardo. He has the great Italian personality to go with his knowledge of the local sites.

Favorite thing: Up on the hill from Ustica village, one has the opportunity to see how long the island has been occupied. Some early Christian tombs were carved out of the rock, and make for a good excuse to have a nice and steep walk, away from the slight bustle of the village center.

Favorite thing: If you come to Ustica, you will surely end up climbing into the village for food an accommodation. Don't miss the great views of the harbour from a nice walk to the ancient Christian sites up the hill.

Favorite thing: The owner of the dive club and the dive master row back from the zodiac after another great day out.
