Important families use to have their own palace in the city centre (and maybe a place in the countryside, where they grew agricultural products). Many of these palaces now would deserve better maintenance, but resources are not always enough. As you may know, many people left Sicily a couple of hundrfeds year ago and establish themselves in America, mostly in the North, and thousands of traditional houses and property are now poorly attended.
Fondest memory: You should spend some time imagining how it used to be in the past. The glorious and luxurious period in which landlords ruled the Sicilian society: it has pro's and an overwhelming amount of con's; but, if you consider the architectural legacy it has been a wonderful period.
If I was working in Palermo municipality, I would never let those cars there...(My urban planner part is moving 8)) ) But Palermo is like this... Cars are everywhere, people unfortunately doesn't respect traffic rules...
In this piazza it wasn't forbidden to park, anyway that's a pity... 8/ But the problems of chaotic cities, as we all know...
Favorite thing: This is the street that intersect with the main street that called "Vittorio Emanuele" and in the end of the street you arrive to famous "Teatro Massimo". The famous scene "the death of Corleone's daughter" of Godfather III was taken on this teatre's stairs... A masterpiece... You know where to go to have more information..For sure my "must see activities" section! ;)
I woke up at 6 o'clock in the morning... Later we've driven to Venice, we took airplane... We've driven and have gotten lost in Palermo streets... And just an half an hour rest and we've found ourselves on the roads again... We walked quite well until here and I'm very very tired...
Now that's time to take a taxi from the piazza and turn back to hotel.. After a small nap going out to have tipical Sicilian food! Yummm... 8)
To have more info, see my restaurants tip.. Very yummy photos are waiting for you there.. ;)
Favorite thing: Among many peoples that came around Sicily in the latest 5,000 years, Roberto il Guiscardo had been one of the most prominent leader. His statue is erected in face of Palazzo dei Normanni, in the shadow.
Palermo has a wonderful history, nature... It has marvellous greem mountains and turquise sea... But unfortunately people are poor and city is heavily polluted...
The appartments around doesn't match with the climate and they seem very poor..
At first, Palermo can be intimidating and confusing, but not more than any other big city. The main historical spots are close to each other in the historical center, limited by the famous Quattro Canti.
Quattro Canti is a good spot to start the exploration of the city or as reference point.
The places I would recommend to visit in this fascinating city are Piazza Pretoria, Piazza Verdi, both near the Quattro Canti and the Cathedral at the end of the Corso Vittorio Emanuele.
Favorite thing: I'm clickin and clickin on the digi's button... Going on walking through the city center... Just a short walk and we'll arrive... Patience.. ;) We're getting well with the city concept..
