This privately owned, single carriage, narrow gauge railway runs approx 110 kilometres almost around the flanks of Mount Etna from Catania Borgo stazione to Riposto from Monday to Saturday (no Sunday service). The whole one way trip takes around three hours. It is possible to travel to one of the towns and have a snack or lunch and then return the same way. Otherwise, take the train the whole distance and return to Catania on a mainline train from Riposto station.

The train gives a good view of the volcano from the lower levels and travels through the countryside, vineyards and fruit and nut orchards amongst other trees; and many of the lovely towns on the flanks. You will see lots of lava flows of differing shades of grey/black with the newest being the darkest; volcanic plug formations and possibly a snow capped or smoking crater depending on the time of year and the level of volcanic activity.

Some of the stations are more up to date than others. If you intend to travel to the station by car a good starting point is Adrano Nord as the station is relatively new with good parking facilities.

Every time I go to Mount Etna I see the FCE buses. The bus appears to follow a road route around Mount Etna similar to the train and I have a distant memory of being told that when you alight the train at a station you can take the bus if preferred. I'll endeavour to find out properly next time I am there.

The timetable can be difficult to access and sometimes it is necessary to google 'Ferrovia Circumetnea orari' to check if there is a more up to date timetable.

I'll post more photos as I locate them!

If you would like suggestions for how to manage the trip please contact me.
