Restrictions for Walking Access on Mount Etna

by rosata Updated Jun 16, 2014
Mount Etna a few weeks ago, from Linguaglossa

I have just seen yet again on the Sicilian TV news that Mount Etna has been erupting from the new SE crater and it reminded me of the walking restrictions implemented last year. If you plan to walk/hike on the volcano do read whatever current information you can find and heed the documents below :

I'll take a photo from my usual spot when the ash cloud has dispersed and the volcano can be seen again from my house.

Mount Etna erupted again 26 October 2013, causing the airport and airspace to be closed for a time. The following link is the up to date information. Many photographs are available on the internet:

Mount Etna volcano has been erupting frequently in 2013 and still continues. No towns have been affected by the lava. Some towns to the east and to the south east as far as the coast have been affected by ash. The airport at Catania has remained open until unfortunately being forced to close on the weekend of 16 March 2013. It is open at the moment.

If you plan to hike I have listed a couple of websites below which hold up to date information. Please check before you make plans.

Due to the number of craters you will always find smoke billowing from one or more of the fissures. It is said that this is the reason the volcano is (hopefully) unlikely to have a major eruption. This is unlike Mount Vesuvius which, I have read, is long overdue a major event.
