Bar Turrisi: Unique Decor and Almond Wine

by mircaskirca

Bar Turrisi is an interesting and unusual bar in the heart of Castelmola. This family run place has a long tradition which passed from generation to generation. It is a three-storey house with a little terrace on each floor, plus one on the top, offering a great view of Piazza Duomo and the waters of Taormina below. What makes Bar Turrisi so special is the unique decor with its bizarre phallic theme. At the beginning it had a big impact on the local people, especially on the priest, but throughout the years the symbol was accepted by everyone and became an important part of the bar. It is present in different shapes and materials, from wood, terracotta, ceramics, iron to glass, and even marzipan. Phallus here is not a vulgar symbol; it has its roots in Greek culture. Bar Turrisi is a nice place to relax and have a coffee, or even better, a glass of Vino alla Mandorla (Almond Wine). It's...

Ristorante Paradiso: Fresh Seafood Sicilian Style

by mircaskirca

Paradiso is the prettiest of the two restaurants of Levanzo. Centrally located close to the pier, the facade of the house is partly made of stone and the rest is white, nicely decorated with marine motifs. Turquoise doors, exactly the colour of the sea, and scarlet bougainvillea climbing upwards the wall, gives a perfect picture of the Mediterranean. The restaurant has a big terrace almost above the sea, offering a stunning view. The inside has a lovely homely feel as well.Paradiso specializes on Sicilian food, especially seafood. Fish is in abundance on the island, so it's always fresh. All the dishes on the menu seamed really tempting. The only trouble when we visited was, that the staff was quite busy, somehow excited and not relaxed, as they were expecting a group of people from the cruise ship. Otherwise, the service was quite correct. I had grilled swordfish that was fine and...

Kentia in Cefalu found in a side street: Pasta Pasta and more Pasta

by bianchis

I primiThe Primi is normally (pasta) or (risotto), depending on the region could vary. The Portions are small after all there is more to come "Secondi"!"Secondi" only meat or fish. Potatoes, Vegetables and Salad can be found under "Contorni" I dolciMmm the best part "Dolci": Desert or icecream. Try a bit of everything delicious.Il caffèA must after a delicious meal is the Caffè. Try not to order a Capuccino as this is what you drink for breakfast, try the Expresso with plenty of sugar or better still "Correto" meaning coffee with Grappa. And if you have survived all of this then you will be hooked on Italian food for life. Pasta of course and pesce del giorno (catch of the day)

Orchidea: Antipasto perfection

by TheWanderingCamel

Another day, another delicious lunch, this time in Zafferana Etnea, an attractive small town we'd passed through on our way up Mt Etna. Liking the look of it, we marked it as somewhere to stop for lunch on our way down to the coast but the town seemed to be closed for business, all apart from a pink-painted place with plastic chairs and tables on the main road. Hungry enough by this time to chance it, we parked and went inside to look at the menu. The spread on the antipasti table was enough to convince us, this was the place to stop! The proprietess was delightful, and so proud of her establishment and her husband's cooking. Rightly so, it was all absolutely delicious. She made sure we understood everything apart from the bread (and that was made in the town) was made on the premises and brought the chef out to shake our hand when the meal was over. Our plates of antipasti tasted every...

Simple Dinner under the Stars :)

by mircaskirca

Most of the times we arrived in the camping early in the evening. After the whole day of driving and sightseeing, it was nice to settle and have some rest. The first thing we had to do was finding a suitable place to put the tent and then came the more pleasant part: the dinner. Sicily offers plenty of good quality local specialities, and fresh fruit and vegetables are in abundance. It was easy to find a local market or buy at one of the many street vendors. Our dinners were quite simple, but healthy and tasty. We used to prepare couscous, polenta, pasta or rise, accompanied by marinated fish, grilled aubergine and artichoke, dried tomatoes, pecorino (sheep cheese), ricotta (cottage cheese which in Sicily is made from sheep's milk), olives and capers. There was always a bowl of mixed salad with the meal (tomatoes, pepper, cucumber and carrot). A little chat with a glass or two of red...

Ai Lumi: Coucous and cassata

by TheWanderingCamel

Dinner at the Tavernetta Ai Lumi is a not-to-be missed treat for anyone visting Trapani, not merely guests of the the B&B of the same name next door, and not just because guests are given a 15% discount on their restaurant bill! Owner, Riccardo and his team have turned the old stables of the 16th century palazzo into a warm and atmospheric haven of good food and fine wine that is popular with locals and visitors alike. Booking is necessary, even mid-week and early in the season, it was full the night we ate there.Mellow stone and warm brick, dark wood, subdued lighting and rich tones of reds, creams and ochres set the scene through a series of arches in a long room where tables are spaced for comfort and conversation. Service is attentive but not intrusive, nice touches include home-made breads and a selection of individual olive oils brought to the table. The menu features regional...

Gelaterias everywhere: Chilly treats

by TheWanderingCamel

It was the Arabs who first developed a taste for frozen desserts in Sicily. Combining their traditional fruit syrups (sarbat) with ice from Mt Etna they made granita - that delicious and cooling slush of fruit syrup - so refreshing on a hot summer day. When some clever cook decided to experiment with the addition of milk, gelato was born. Adding the milk changed the texture and also meant more flavours - nuts and chocolate for example - could be used. Today icecream is a world-wide favourite but there's few who would dispute that Sicily - where it is gelato and not icecream - there is a difference - produces some of the very best. The variety of flavours is bewildering and you can't go far in any town without coming across a gelato stall of some sort. Lots of it is factory-made these days but the best is made by hand, fresh daily and in small batches.Gelato and icecream do taste...

Selinunte, Segesta and other stops along the way: Pitstop lunches

by TheWanderingCamel

Long, indulgent lunches are great, but not for every day, even when you're on holiday. With so many wonderful places to see (some of them quite out of the way) not to mention markets full of the most fabulous fresh produce, there are days when a simple meal is all you want, whether it's a sandwich and a cold drink at a small cafe, a roadside picnic or a spread of market treats. We certainly had our share of those, but, this being Sicily, where good food is a matter of pride, even at places like Selinunte and Segesta - potential tourist traps in that they had no competition - served food that was fresh, flavoursome and reasonably priced.

La Ruota: Rabbit stew and caponata

by TheWanderingCamel

It was the promise of a house speciality of rabbit stew that made up our minds for us when deciding where to eat lunch the day we visited the Villa Romana de Casale near Piazza Armerina. La Ruota is "reknowned throughout central Sicily for its hearty rural fare" according to one guide book, so, even though we tend to be wary of restaurants that are in close proximity to major sites - all too often they rely on their convenience to be their main attraction rather than the quality of their food - we parked the car and hurried a little to get in ahead the coach party that pulled in behind us.We needn't have worried on either account - the food was wonderful and the coach party was taken care of without any effect on the other diners.Housed in an old stone-built mill, La Ruota's shady terrace was pleasantly cool after the heat in the glass and perspex boxes that house the Villa's mosaics. A...
