Parking in Taormina

Taormina is a small touristic town. Attempts to park in one of the streets are not only futile but extremely stressful!! Best option is to park your car in the Lumbi Car Park (plenty of signs to indicate the way). You can either walk up the stairs or take the free shuttle to the town. The shuttle gets packed - especially on weekends. The stairs are not too steep and, if you take it slow, you shouldn't even break into a sweat!

Scooter

If you want to explore the region around Taormina you can rent a scooter. You can find rental companies everywhere.

The rates aren't very high, but it's worth it comparing the different companies. You can get a 50CC scooter without a drivers licence you only need to be 18 years old. For a 125CC scooter you need a motoerbike drivers licence. The scooters are quite new and you get a helmet when you rent the scooter

My tip: don't use a 50CC scooter for 2 persons, the region has got some steep hills and the small scooter won't get you up...

The company we used Cundari. The cost for a 50CC scooter for 4 hours was €15

Bus

There are Express and local busses to get to and from Taormina. They go in all different directions, like to Catania (Airport), Siracusa or Palermo and up to Castelmola.

The Bus station is in the lower part of the Village near the cable car. At the bus station there is a ticket office where you get the timetables and information.

Night train

We allways go to Sicily by train. There are some good connections from northern Italy to sicily with through night trains. The ride from Milano to Taormina is very long, about 16-17 hours, but that doesn't matter as most of the time you sleep. To get from mainland Italy to Sicily the whole train is put on a ferry wich is quite an interesting to see. On the ship you have enogh time to go and have a coffee.

The next station to Taormina is called "Taormina-Giardini" and is located down at sea level. From the station there are busses to Taormina or you can take a Taxi.

Some people come to Taormina on these cruise ships, anchoring in the Bay of Naxos and ferrying passengers ashore and up the mountain. Quite an old fashioned and romantic way to see it I suppose.

Funivia

The fastest way to get to the sea from Taormina is the "Funivia" the cable car. It leaves every few minutes from the morning to the late evening.

The return ticket is € 2.70
