The town has tracings back to before the 3rd century BC. It was a defensive fortress for centuries and controlled by Aldobrandeschi and then Orsini families. The fort was erected in 1172 and had three parts. That was brought together in 14th century, but the expansion was not completed until 1552. At the entrance of fortessa Orsini is the Orsini and Aldobrandeschi family coat of arms.
There are two parts to the town; upper with the clock tower and San Niccolo church and lower with the caste/fort. The clock tower is walled area called Masso Leopoldino symbolizing Medieval architecture. It was the last line of defense in case of intrusion. You can climb the to of the tower-not high, but the view is better of the area. The walk to the clock tower area through the narrow and winding streets is an event to remember. Overhang of balconies and all houses of rock besides the town being carved out of tufo rock

The fort museum was a small tour, lasting only 1/2 hour at most. It is rustic and not a lot to view, but locals are proud of displays. The fortress was a focal point for defenses of the area for centuries. The fort was redone in the 16th century by the Orsini family. The fort has a semi-circular tower, and a large courtyard inside in addition to the castle museum. There are frescoes on the walls/somewhat faded, and a four part madrigal.

There are many tours, some guided, others not, to see the Etruscan caves and surrounding area. Some may be lengthy; as long as 6 miles to get around the whole area and see the Etruscan caves.

Looking down, you can see caves where Etruscans lived to begin with until creating the village. There are tours all around the area pointing out the many caves on the hills.
