 Arch of the Rib by hopang Arco della Costa or the Arch of the Rib is located on the western part of Piazza delle Erbe between Palazo del Comune and Domus Nova in the city of Verona. If you walk under Arco della Costa, you will notice a large whale rib hanging under the arch. The rib has been hanging there for more than 300 years! Legend has it that the rib will fall on the head of the first person who walks underneath it and who has never told a lie. So far that person has not passed the arch as the rib is still hanging under the arch!  San Lorenzo by hopang Basilica di San Lorenzo (Basilica of St. Lawrence) is located near the San Lorenzo Market in the heart of the city of Florence. It is one of the largest churches in Florence. It is also one of the oldest churches in Italy which dates back to the year 400 AD when St. Ambrose consecrated it. The basilica has Renaissance style of architecture. The construction of the basilica began in 1419 by Filippo Brunelleschi on the location of the old church and was not completed until 1460 under the command of Antonio Manetti. The inner facades in white Carrera marble were the work of Michelangelo. Two bronze pulpits designed by Donatello in 1460 are located at the end of the nave. The crucifix located at the high altar was the work of Baccio da Montelupo. A marble altar designed by Desiderio da Settignano is also located inside the basilica.  Basilica of San Domenico by hopang Basilica of San Domenico is located on the hill of Camporegio in the historic centre of Siena. Construction of the Roman Catholic church began from 1226 and did not complete until 1265 by the Dominicans on the hill which they received from Malavolti family as a present. The basilica is dedicated to St. Dominic and is closely associated with St. Catherine of Siena. It was constructed of bricks in Gothic style of architecture. The basilica contains a Maesta by Guido da Siena which dates back to the 13th century. A portrait of St. Catherine by Andrea Vanni can be seen inside the chapel of St. Catherine which also contains many other popular paintings mostly the work of Sodoma. The area around Basilica of San Domenico has a spectacular view of the Duomo and the surrounding areas of historic city of Siena. Opening hours are between 7.00 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. daily, closed during lunch hours. Admission to the basilica is free. Visit the Basilica of San Domenico if you have the time to spare!  Camposanto by hopang Camposanto Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery) is located at the north end of Piazza dei Miracoli in the heart of Pisa. It was constructed in 1278 and was only completed in 1464 after almost two centuries of construction work. It was used as a cemetery for Pisa's elite. Camposanto was designed by Giovanni di Simone. The outer wall consists of 43 blind arches as seen in our photo on the right. The right doorway contains a Gothic tabemacle "Virgin Mary with Child" surrounded by four saints. The interior of Camposanto contains numerous collections of Roman sculptures and sarcophagi. The frescoes inside the cemetery are some of the finest examples of Medieval art that can be found in Italy.  The Bell Tower by hopang Companile di Giotto or Giotto Bell Tower is located next to the Duomo in the heart of the city of Florence. It is part of the cathedral complex which has been listed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is a free standing bell tower made up of five levels. It is approximately 82 meters high with a square base of approximately 14.50 meters. Companile was designed by Giotto who began construction of the bell tower in 1334. It was not completed until after his death in 1337. The construction of the bell tower continued under Andrea Pisano and was completed in 1359 under Francesco Talenti. The Bell Tower has no lift. Visitors are allowed to climb up the 414 steps to the top of the tower for a small fee.  Fontana Di Trevi by hopang Fontana Di Trevi is a very popular tourist attraction located at Piazza di Trevi in the heart of the city of Rome. Millions of foreign tourists visit Fontana Di Trevi every year as admission to the fountain is free. It is the largest and most fanmous Baroque fountain in Rome. It is also beautifully-lit up if you visit the fountain at night. Construction of Fontana Di Trevi began in 1732 and was not completed until 1762. It was designed by Nicola Salvi for Pope Clement XII. However Nicola Salvi died before the fountain was fully completed. Giuseppe Pannini took over the design of the fountain after Salvi's death. The fountain measures approximately 26 metres high and approximately 20 metres wide. The statues in the center represent Neptune (God of the Sea) with two Tritons sculptured on either side. Poli Palace provides the magnificent backdrop. Take the opportunity to throw a coin over your left shoulder and make a wish. You will be guaranteed an early return to Rome. This is what most locals and foreign tourists are doing when they visit Fontana Di Trevi. Don't ask us why - just do as the Romans do! It is up to you to believe it or not.  Loggia della Signoria by hopang Loggia della Signoria is located at Piazza della Signoria next to Palazzo Vecchio and adjoining the Uffizi Gallery not far from Ponte Vecchio and the Arno River in the heart of the city of Florence. It is one of the buildings in Florence with incomparable beauty and elegance. Loggia della Signoria was designed by Benci di Cione and Simone Talenti, the same architects who designed the Duomo, between 1376 and 1382 for Florentine Republic for public ceremonies. It is one of the best examples of late Florentine Gothic style, a transition to Renaissance style. It consists of wide arches open to the square supported by clustered Corinthian columns crowned by balustrade. There are two lions near the entrance, the left in 16th century style and the right in classical style. Beneath the arch on the right stands the statue "Rape of the Sabines" designed by Giambologna in 1583. Beneath the arch on the left stands the statue of Perseus designed by Benveneto Cellini in 1554. In the middle part of the Loggia stands several statues such as Hercules and the Centaur also designed by Giambologna (1599), Menelaus supporting the body of Patroclus and the Rape of Polyxena designed by Pio Fedi in 1866. Take your time to examine the various statues at the Loggia!  Piazza della Repubblica by hopang The Piazza della Repubblica is located at the site of the old market place which was demolished in 1887 to make way for the present square. The present square was completed around 1915. It is now flanked by several 19th century palaces and closed by shopping malls at the back. Piazza della Repubblica is now the modern city center dotted with many sidewalk cafes, bars, restaurants and shopping arcades. The column that was erected in the center of the square is a copy of the Statue of Abundance which was replaced when the area was the site of the old market.  The Uffizi by hopang The Uffizi Gallery is located at Piazza degli Uffizi between Palazzo Vecchio at Piazza della Signoria and the Arno River in the heart of the city of Florence. The Uffizi Gallery is one of the oldest and most famous art galleries in the world. It is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city of Florence. Loggia del Consiglio is located on the northern end of Piazza dei Signori/Piazza Dante in the city of Verona. It is attached to Piazza degli Scaligeri. It was constructed in 1493 and was designed by Fra Giocondo. The palace is regarded as the finest Renaissance architectural building in Verona. It was home to City Council of Verona. Loggia del Consiglio was the last building to be constructed at Piazza dei Signori. The roof of the building is fitted with statues of five great Veronese from the Roman era. They are Castello, Pliny, Marcus, Vitruvio and Cornelius. Paintings of historic importance and values commisioned by the City Council in the 16th century are located inside the building.
