Spello: Umbria’s flower town & amazing views

by Trekki

Spello is one of the romantic and cute little hill towns of Umbria. Contrary to others like Trevi it does not sit on a hill but stretches upwards on the south eastern slope of Monte Subasio, south of Assisi. It is a beautiful town, ideal to spend the day especially from spring to summer because literally almost every house in the centre is decorated with flower pots and other plants. From this aspect I found Spello lovely but somehow “all dressed up”. It can get too much for the eyes after a day. Many crafts shops line the roads especially with ceramic arts or galleries. The town has ancient origins, dating back to the times of the Umbri and Etruscans and later the Romans and many buildings are said to have been built on the remains of ancient temples. The town wall is almost intact and loosened up here and there with town gates, many of them being still intact. Up on the highest point...

Canossa, the castle behind the saying :-)

by Trekki

In the cold and snowy days of a January day in 1077, so say history experts, a famous incident happened here on Canossa Castle: Salian Emperor Henry IV stood in front of the entrance portals for three days, barefoot and full of penitence. It was to have a preliminary end to the fierce dispute (investiture controversy) between pope and emperor who would be the “higher ranked” and thus have the right to declare bishops and popes. (of course the whole story is much more complicated but I leave that to the respective websites). When Henry IV walked all the way down to Canossa, he came from Speyer, where the Salians had their seat. Speyer is located close to where I grew up and that’s why I always wanted to see what was left of that famous Canossa Castle. Add to this the history classes at school and the famous saying “to walk to Canossa” when something painful has to be done and penance is...

Outside Siena: marvellous countryside

by Trekki

The countryside southeast of Siena is marvellous. This is the part of Toscana where these endless winding streets with cypresses are found and where Crete Senesi is located, this in a way moonlike landscape. Very much worth a day trip. Unfortunately it is rather difficult to find public transportation for such a countryside trip; it would involve many changes and at the end not much would be left from the day. So it is easier to rent a car and drive around. Rental cars are available in Siena.I found the most enchanting landscape being along the street SP/SS438, south of the highway that connects Siena with Perugia. When I drove past in November the fields were already harvested and had this earthen colour which, together with a ray of sunlight here and there, gave this all an almost out of this world appearance. And then there is Abbazia di Monte Oliveto nearby, a Benedictine monastery...

Siena, much more than Campo...

by Trekki

Siena is well worth a visit not only as a day trip to Campo and duomo. I would suggest a minimum of two or even three days and especially visits to Museo Civico and Santa Maria della Scala. Museo Civico houses a marvellous collection of frescoes of the time of council of the nine, a magnificent way to walk back in time. Santa Maria della Scala is another sadly very much unnoticed museum. Rather humble it sits just opposite of the entrance to the duomo but it has an amazing history: it was one of the first hospitals in Europe, dating back to the 9th century. Add to this a very lively atmosphere during the days around Siena’s most famous festival, the Palio, and a very charming feel of the old town anywhere off the main touristy axis between duomo and campo and you have all the ingredients for a very much relaxed visit.I stayed in Siena for two weeks in November 2010, to attend a language...

Sardegna, wild and beautiful island

by Trekki

My first and definitely not last visit to Sardegna was in June 1999 and it was one of the most “olfactory infatuating” trips I ever had. My boyfriend of that time and I went on a motorcycle trip (me as backseat passenger) and smelling the macchia made me so often want to hop from the bike and lie down in this incredible aroma forever. My photos are not good (scans from old slides) and it was way before VT, so I didn’t take notes of prices. But I still know where we have been and that’s what I want to recommend. We spent two weeks on this beautiful and wild island, camping, and based ourselves near Orosei, near Arbatax (photo 3) (Camping Coccorrocci, highly recommended!), in Villasimius and near Alghero, from where we took day trips. Most fascinating to me were the trips into the centre of the island, especially the tour from Lanusei (westward), which is a magnificent region, not only for...

Torcello – immerse deep into past and beauty

by Trekki

If you are interested in history, visiting the island of Torcello is a must. It is situated just next to Burano, in the very northeastern end of the lagoon, accessible by vaporetto line LN and changing boats in Burano.Visiting this island will draw you back in the days of early lagoon settlement, as it was the centre and seat of the bishop until end of 12th century. Basilica Santa Maria Assunta (photo 5), has been built in 640 and later on expanded. It is most famous for the very much splendid Byzantine mosaics of Maria and apostles and the Last Judgement. Next to her is Santa Fosca of 12th century (photo 4). This one is not as decorated inside, but has a very cheerful atmosphere inside, with little Byzantine or oriental lamps burning. But the island has many more treasures. Opposite of the churches is a little house with a very much picturesque gaden with mossy statues (like in the main...

Burano – colour your day and soul

by Trekki

Burano island is something for heart and soul. The old fishermens’ island is approximately 45 minutes to Venezia’s west, just next to Torcello. Every house is painted in a different colour. There is almost no colour possible that is not represented there. Together, this makes a magnificent mix of colours – just a feast for the eye. Try and don’t race through the village. It is worthwile to wander through the streets, take in these colours and the atmosphere. In the backstreets and canales, there are lovely options for reflection photos. Yes, make sure to take lots of film or cards and batteries. In addition, you can visit the lace museum Museo del Merletto, learn about the skilfull art of lace making. It is open daily except Tuesdays, entry fee is 4 € in case you don’t have the Venice Card Orange (in which it is included). You can also buy lace here, but as for glass, it is not cheap. I...

Murano – centre of holy glass

by Trekki

If you intend to buy fabulous Murano glassware, you should go directly to the island and look instead of being taken in in a shop around the neuralgic and touristy spots in San Marco, which might sell you Chinese crap for Made in Murano. Now Venezia does a lot to demolish the dealers that dare to do this (see what I wrote in the tourist trap section). But to make sure to buy genuine work, it is better to buy directly from the manufacturers. The real work has a logo Vetro Artistico Murano (check the website given below) and is not cheap of course. In addition, I highly recommend to visit Murano’s glass museum Museo del Vetro, as here you can learn about the process of glass making and appreciate the work behind the finished products (and understand why they are not that cheap as the Chinese crap). Entrance fee is 5,50 € in case you don’t have the Venice Card Orange (in which it is...

Venezia's lagoon – islands and wildlife

by Trekki

If you are planning to stay in Venezia for a couple of days, a visit to the laguna and the islands is a must. But even in one day it is not possible to see much of the islands, I recommend minimum 2 days or more, especially if you like wildlife watching.Venezia’s laguna is a very fragile ecosystem, with countless smaller and bigger islands (see website below, and then lagoon of Venice/islands). The site says that the islands make up only for 8% of the laguna’s surface, so you can imagine how much is left for marshland, thus wildlife. The most important islands to visit are definitely Murano (for the glass), Burano (for the colours), Torcello (for the very old past of the area) and San Michele (the city’s graveyard). But there are others, such as Sant’Erasmo (one of the laguna’s farm island), or San Lazaro degli Armeni (Mechitarist monastery), Lazaretto Nuovo (the former quarantine island...

Attend a mass in Basilica San Marco, Venezia

by Trekki

Among the many things to do in Venezia I want to suggest only one specifically here (in my Italy to-do section), and this is to attend a mass in Basilica San Marco. During my days in Venezia, I sneaked around the Basilica several times, as it did fascinate me in any way, and I was thinking back and forth if and how I will visit her. I simply could not stand the thought to see this masterpiece’s inside surrounded by shrieking visitors. Maybe it would not have been so, maybe the guards would have used discipline to keep them at least a bit silent. But I surely did not want to find out. So I finally decided to attend a service in the Basilica, to visit her as what she was built for and what is still her main purpose. The church service starts at 10:30, entry is through the door at Piazetta Leonici (northern entrance). Of course, the guards will only allow visitors without huge bags and with...
