Cinque Terre - A World Heritage site

by KB&MC

Go to Cinque Terre. Go off season.Do trail 2. Everything you've read about the bits between Riomaggiore and Manarola and, Manarola and Corniglia being the easier bits are true. It does get more difficult from Corniglia to Vernazza and to Monterosso.Take lots of water, wear sunscreen, decent hiking boots/shoes, etc, etc.If you're a seasoned hiker though, the "more difficult parts" are of moderate difficulty, with only a few, although sometimes long uphill hikes. We'd suggest going from the south to the north, as it means the finish of your hike is downhill and you don't start with a climb. If you're not, the train and/or the ferry are also easy ways to get around. The ferry is obviously the nicer of the options. (About 12 euro return between for eg Vernazza and Riomaggiore)If you enjoy hiking/ bushwalking, we'd highly recommend not only doing trail 2/ the blue trail - the one everyone does...

nothing funny happened on the way to the forum :-(

by odysseus_23

the forum was a place of immense dignity and , oddly , of humour , to me. Dignity , because it has literally-every stone and piece of it, seen time go by- now only if those stones could speak.Would they speak of the great Caesar, the debates that happened on its floors, the market stores that sold all manner of exotic goods, the temple of Vesta and its servants!!!Funny, because as a die hard Asterix fan, i kept visualizing Asterix and Obelix looking at all those roman centurions going"Ave", and them going,"Tee Hee". wonder if the romans had an architect called squareonthehypotenus.

Welcome to Italy

by sim1

I have been to Italy four times, and it has stolen my heart. When I think of Italy I think of the sun, the magnificent sunsets, the beautiful hills, the small towns that haven't changed since the middle ages, the friendly people and the fantastic food!In this page I want to give an overview of my trips through Italy. In time I will write more detailed pages which you will find on the various city pages off Italy.I have been to Italy five times, the first time I went to Tuscany, Umbria and of course the beautiful town of Rome. The second time I went further south, and visited the area around Napoli, but also went to the eastcoast, through central Italy and couldn't resist to spend several more days in beautiful Tuscany. The third had as excuse the VT-meeting in Bergamo. Hahaha, I love those kind of excuses to do some travelling. I had great fun in Bergamo at the meeting, and met some...

Pisa and Young Kids - No Tower

by momoftwinboys

We went to Pisa in the pouring rain in January 2008. It was quite beautiful in spite of the weather. The one thing that NO ONE, including the guide books, tells you is that children under the age of 8 may NOT climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa! That was the one part of our trip to Italy that the kids were really looking forward to! My freind and I ended up with 2 crying kids. Luckily, we were able to calm the waters by allowing each of them to buy something from the gift shop.

Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana, or Duomo Museum

by Paul2001

The Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana, or the Duomo Museum' in Siena is one of that cities more astonishing museums and one almost overlooked. The fact is I visited the Duomo twice and only visited its museum as an afterthought. The museum has a wonderful collection of religious artifacts that you usually find in Italian cathedrals however here the artworks are truly special. Included in the museums collections are sculptures that used to adorn the facade of the Duomo and many outstanding alterpieces removed from the Duomo itself. Among these is Duccio's Maestà considered the most important masterpiece in the museum. The work is considered to be one of the most important late medieval paintings and datefrom 1311. The Treasury Room is has many astonishing artifacts too including an early Crucifix by Giovanni Pisano. Also a must see is the climb up the stairs to facade of the very incomplete...

If you go for an hour, go for the day!

by melissa_j

Tivoli, ancient home to Emperors and aristocrats. Quaint little piazzas and narrow cobblestone streets. This town seems at time to be trapped in it's past. It shelters 2 amazing Villas (D'Este, D'Adriana) and 1 reportedly amazing garden. I never got to see the garden (hence why I recommend a day) but I was in awe of the Villas. Villa D'Este is home to some of the more amazing fountains I've seen, even in books!, and it was cool and calm in the warm day. There were several vantage points where you could look out over the Lazio countryside. Remarkable. Villa D'Adriana is a ways out of the city but I spent several hours just wandering through the ruins. Anyone with a discernible speck of imagination will see the buildings reforming in front of your eyes. It's more open and less shaded but stunning views and with so much open space you can feel alone. It's truly a wonder.

Who needs a stairmaster?

by melissa_j

When you go to Florence make sure to climb to the utmost top of the Duomo, the views can't be matched! It's a long climb (420 steps or something ridiculous like that) and it's kinda dark and dingy (bring antibacterial hand cleaner) buit when you finally get ot the top... I'm deathly afraid of heights but even I quickly peered over the edge. It cost 6-8 Euro and was well worth it. And it should be mentioned that I am pretty much out of shape so if I can do it, you can do it!

Climbing the Duomo

by madamx

The Church of Santa Maria del Fiore has become the symbol of Florence with it's distinctive dome. The Duomo remains Florence's most tallest structure, and it's bapistry with the famous "Gates of Paradise" is one of Florence's oldest buiildings, built in the 4th Century. In my opinion, the interior of the church itself is really not worth spending a lot of time in if you are on a short visit to Florence, unless you want to have a quick look at the frescoes painted on the dome's interior -- not really the best way to see them. Instead, make time to climb the reputed 463 steps to the rooftop of Florence; you will be rewarded with stunning views, plus you'll be able to see the frescoes close-up. The only reason to not do this is if you are claustrophobic, have physical limitations or if it's the height of summer in Florence. The passage way is dark and narrow, and can get very warm. It will...

Pompeii

by envelnikki

Pompeii is worth the visit! It has so much to offer, both historically and architecturally. The people that populated Pompeii seemed to be intellectually advanced for their time period, particularly with their road and building designs. The story is a tragic one but the amount of information the site has to offer is overwhelming- but well worth the time, money and knowledge! Nothing can compare to seeing this ancient city frozen in time in person.
