Inside Orvieto's Duomo

by iandsmith

Once you get past the facade, there is some exceptional work to see inside as well, particularly in the famous San Brizio Chapel, located on your right as you walk down the aisle. As with most things worth seeing in Italy, it costs and you can't take photos. Started by Fra Angelica and Gozzoli, then finally completed by Luca Signorelli in 1504. The work is considered to be the latter's masterpiece and I have to say it certainly impressed me as being more than your standard church fresco. The Preaching of the Antichrist lunette, located on your left as you face the chapel, is a stunner. Some of the notable people included in the painting include the artist himself with Fra Angelica on the left, then, in the crowd in the middle you might find the young Raphael, Boccaccio, Petrarch, Cesare Borgia and possibly Christopher Columbus.Beneath you can see Dante seated, obviously in study mode with...

Chianty Sculpture Park

by manuna

While visiting Siena, don't forget to visit this park. It is a combination of delightful walk in natural surrounds and an opportunity to see some unique pieces of art. Sculptors from all over the world were invited to choose the spot in the park for their masterpiece that was created for this park. It is owned by a very pleasant couple. (Their home and gallery is across the road from the park and they welcome everybody there as well)We were the first visitors (though we came after 10 a.m), and they opened it just for us.

The Cinque Terre

by madamx

The Cinque Terre consists of 5 villages perched on the scenic Ligurian coast that are connected by a hiking trail or boat, or the less scenic alternatives of train and highway. It is approximately 1 1/2 hours by train or car from Florence, and I highly recommend to stay at least one night here. We were only able to come on a day trip due to our travel schedule and had all these great intentions to hike part of the trail. However, the Cinque Terre has a lovely habit of sucking any type of ambition out of you, with temptations of sitting in a cafe lazily watching the world go by, or hanging out by one of the harbors, noshing on the foccaccia that the area is famous for. So, if you want to hike, schedule plenty of time for yourself. The coastline is stunning, and very similar to the Amalfi coast, so if you have to choose between the two, don't worry about missing out on one or the other. We...

Pompeii

by madamx

Pompeii had a population of about 20,000 when it was buried under 30 feet of volcanic mud and ash in 79 AD. Even with excavations starting in the 1700's and continuing on presently, only a small part of the city is accessible for tourists. It was overcast with a bit a rain off and on the day we were in Pompeii -- perfect as it wouldn't be too hot. If it's warm and sunny the day you go, make sure to carry plenty of water, hat or umbrella and sunscreen. Pompeii is huge and from what I could see quite lacking in refreshment and rest areas. The entrance is lined with guides and they were actually pretty aggressive in trying to get you to join up with them, maybe the weather was making it a bit slow. I have heard that your experience varies with what guide you get, and some may not be all that knowledgeable. Pompeii can be any depth of experience you allow it to be -- a guide will set you back...

Museo Archeologico Nazionale

by madamx

A visit here MUST follow a visit to Pompeii in my opinion; it really puts everything into perspective. The National Archeological Museum is probably Europe's best archeological museum and holds all the artifacts excavated from Pompeii. Ideally, visit Pompeii in the morning and then have lunch in Naples -- you have to have pizza in it's birthplace of Naples -- after lunch visit the museum.Do not believe anyone who tells you the museum is dirty and disorganized. We found all exhibits orderly and labelled well. The museum did recently have a major overhaul, and it shows. Our prime purpose was to visit the Pompeii and Herculaneum artifacts, mosiacs and frescoes, which are located on the second floor, but there are good Etruscan and Egyptian exhibits as well. We found the crowds (and screaming schoolkids) thinned out considerably after about 5:00 pm. I purchased a guide for about 35 Euros,...

Bassano del Grappa

by madamx

The hilltowns of Veneto are vastly underrated; less touristy than Tuscany, but probably just as pretty. Bassano del Grappa is one of them -- primarily known for the alcohol called grappa. Many shops offer grappa for sale in bottles of all shapes and forms and will give out free samples. Also, Bassano is also known for it's ceramics. I found them not as heavily decorated as ceramics from Tuscany or Umbria; they have an airy or more delicate feel to them. The prices are fairly inexpensive and make nice souveniers for the people back home. Other things you can shop for are honey and porcini mushrooms. The town is famous for it's romantic 16th century wooden-covered bridge over The Brenta River, the Ponte degli Alpini, designed by Palladio. Wood was used as it can flex with heavy spring meltwaters that flow down the Brenta. A stroll is mandatory across the bridge; we saw large trout swimming...

See the Sorrento Musical

by no1birdlady

One evening we had a nice meal at a restaurant in Sorrento and then walked to the Teatro Tasso(Theatre) to see the Sorrento Musical. This is a wonderful show of napolitan dances, customs and music. We had wonderful seats on the front row. The costumes were beautiful and the singers were excellent. It was all in Italian so I'm not sure about the plot but there was a scene with fishermen and their nets; another in the market, another at night with lovers singing to each other and the finale. I loved the songs and even recognized a few of them such as O'Sole Mio, Santa Lucia, and Funiculi Funicula.
