This is not a warning as such, however we learned the hard way. When you travel to these small, non-touristy areas, you must be on the lookout for the signs indicating that you are 'now leaving' specific towns.
For instance, we drove through Torreglia and didn't notice which town it was. As we were leaving, we both noticed a sign showing 'Torreglia' with a red line drawn through it, and the name of the next town coming up written in smaller letters on the bottom. It makes sense.
However, at the time we were both so interested in the scenery, that it just didn't register. Duhhh.
In this case, we were happy we missed our stop and had to walk back. The two kms was filled with photo ops that we otherwise would have missed.
