Trenitalia and Express-2 does not work together!

by GyuriFT

No surprise: Trenitalia uses a different reservation system than (ex) Soviet Express-2.Surprise: in their Very Infinite Wisdom (r) Trenitalia/FS and RZD could not agree, how to run a sleeper with reservation properly.Result: the weekly Moscow-Kiev-Budapest-Zagreb-Ljubljana-Venezia-Ljubljana-Zagreb-Budapest-Kiev-Moscowsleeper does not show up in Trenitalia, but does show up in Express-2. So even the ticket office in Venice is not aware, passengers can use the Russian sleeper while going to Zagreb or Budapest - always a more expensive service is being sold! Nothing to do. Just be aware, even the regular "smart" price Venezia-Budapest 29 Euro can be upgraded by Russian conductor on the board of always empty sleeper for few Euros. Enjoy the first-class service from Budapest to Venice (or the other way) for next to nothing. Since the sleeper is not in the Trenitalia/FS reservation system no...

Outlet Mall-Outside Florence Italy

by fairbanks59

Most tours companies have to charge you for an excursion to the outlet malls outside of Florence. Beware: It is an outlet mall for the rich and size 2s of the world: something may be 50% off but it's 50% off of 2400 euros! The salespeople did not acknowledge any of the shoppers in our group (EVERY STORE), even to say hello in English or Italian. Our group did not purchase one item and were disappointed we wasted our limited time in Italy on this excursion. Add 1 hour to stop there on the way to or from another site. We were able to afford a glass of wine and a beer. Stay in Florence for shopping. The REAL designer stores ares less expensive than the outlets and they have more sizes.

Eating near the Vatican - don't!

by kenbrown

Bottom line is don't! We stayed at the Hotel Bramante adjacent to the Vatican Walls (actually built against the wall). Asked at reception for somewhere to eat close by. They were very diplomatic and gave us walking directions to Piazza Navona. We were tired (just arrived from Canada) and trolled Borgo Pio! Mistake! Go to Piazza Navona!

rental car - hidden costs

by patrickvab

We rented a car with Europcar for four days with full insurance (extra 15 euro/day) for peace of mind. We asked the receptionist about any possible extra costs. The answer: only fuel (always return car with full tank) and police tickets. Sounded ok. During the renting time we had a flat tire which was replaced with the spare tire without problems.Upon returning the car to the company we informed the receptionist about the flat tire. She told us we had to pay for the repair of the tire! Actually the tires, roof and underside of the car are NOT included in the full insurance. We remembered the receptionist about our question of any extra costs with a full insurance. A hefty discussion followed. We asked her if she could show us where this was written in the contract. She gave us a contract (2 pages of small print) but refused to show where it was written so we started to read. This took a...

Using buses

by Ann1ebelle

We were not told that you have to buy your bus tickets before getting on the bus, when we stayed in Amalfi. We were therefore fined 32 euros each for not having a ticket, although the inspector could clearly see that we obviously didn't know about this. ALWAYS remember to get your bus tickets before using local bus services. I wouldn't! We had a hire car, which got hit twice in the first day on the Amalfi coast; the Italians must be the world's worst drivers. Do use buses, but do get your tickets first (they are only 1 euro.)

Avoid being ripped off

by mileslunn

If in a tourist area, there is a tendency to have pricy products and even to try and rip off tourists so best to know what you are doing and also try to speak a little bit of Italian if possible. Check around to see what prices are elsewhere and if possible buy things outside the tourist areas.

Be on Time to Catch The Tours

by anees

In my one day visit to Venice, as I had one morning only in the town. so I had to catch the tour leaving to sSan Marco Square and the srounding area. I wanted to join American Express tour in that morning, but unfortunately I've missed it by couple of ... .... well I over slept so I showed up at 9:30 am to find out that the tour has left at 9:10 am. I felt so sorry for that for a while, before I decided to go do it by my self. I decided to go to the castle by my self. taking that recorded guide. You will be lost for a while in the beginning, just stop and try to catch the right place the guide trying to explain to you, than, there you go to the open museum where you can go room by room.

bBe Carful Eating or Drinking Near Tourstic Sites

by anees

As I can say dont' eat in restaurants nearby Vatican or San peter square,. and don't have coffee at the cafes on piazza San Marco in Venice..... the decor is very nice and so is the music...but a super short expresso of average taste cost $10 because you have to pay for the backgorund live classic music as well. well... my best advice to you would be to not go to any of those tourist restaurants you find everywhere in the heart of Venice island. The prices may seem average but what they really serve you is tasteless food. You just take a look at tourists guids and they will give you some good restaurants in all towns. just try to avoid what i call it tourist restaurants. if u already ate in one of them. try to not to do it again. if your time is limited to move to good restaurants. or you are not finding your way to the good once. you just read the minuet before u go in and ask the...

Car Hire - Do _not_ pay a cash deposit!!!

by Aniko71

I have visited Italy in January 2007 and rented a car form Italy by Car in Taormina Giardini. I had to pay a 300 euro (appr. 400 USD) deposit because I didn't have a credit card, only an ATM/debit card with no embossed numbers on it. I dropped off the car on January 15 in Napoli and filled in a deposit refund form giving my IBAN bank code and SWIFT code. I have not received any payment till now, though I contacted the Palermo center of Italy by car several times by phone and e-mail.Do _not_ pay a cash deposit!!!

The Church of San Domenico in Siena

by Paul2001

Not all Medieval churches are beautiful and you want an example of this then take in the Church of San Domenico in Siena. From the outside it comes across as just a heep of red bricks. There seems to have been no attempt to restore the church in a more modern and decorative design as is quite common in Italy. So this church has remained cold and unwelcoming. The interior is also lacking something in the way of architectural wonders. Upon first glance it comes across as a big auditorium for assemblies rather than a church. The interior does have some isolated artworks of note such as frescos and some striking paintings by Matteo di Giovanni. One of his masterpieces, "St Barbara Enthroned with Angels and Sts Mary Magdalen and Catherin" is located in the first chapel to the right of the altar. I also found the stain glass impressive. From the Piazza outside of the church you can take in...
