Street Merchants

by Dzo

Street merchants usually jump you as soon as they see you coming out of a bus load of new tourists. Street merchants are everywhere in north Italy, from Venice all the way to Rome. They think your fresh meat, they know you have money on you, and they want to sell you some crap...Twice the price it's worth! Usually little wooden African carvings, knife/lighters, fake branded sunglasses or watches. Never buy the first thing they throw at you, you'll probably encounter the same thing 10 times during your stay at the destination. If you can't resist buying something you like, ALWAYS negotiate the price. Trash bough off the streets, are no good Italian souvenirs. There are many little shops that can sell you authentic Italian souvenirs.

Grandi Navi Veloci/Grimaldi ferries

by travelthrough

I advise all future passengers and BUDGET TRAVELERS especially who might want togo to other countries or cities by ship on the Italian ferry companies Grandi Navi Veloci(and also Grimaldi ferries) - mainly to Tunisia, Malta, or Sicily - that the ferries are atourist trap! The food in SELF SERVICE bar (!) is over-expensive and passengers paythe same amount they would pay in first class hotels, whereas the quality of the food(even of simple meals such as pasta) is very poor! For example, a small plate of pastacosts you 6.50 Euros, a small bread roll (panini) 0.30 Euros !! And you will not even befull.Avoid supporting these companies because it is simply an exploitation of budget travelers, tourists, and commuters. ...at least bring as much of your own food as possible if you want to live cheap and notpay 20 Euros (at least) to get a full stomach. Traveling by train or plane and avoiding...

Stay away from "self served" restaurants

by polartraveller

There are lots of restaurants in the tourist part of town, expecially around the Vatican, that offers "self served" food where one pick the food and do not have to pay until after your meal. Be very careful what you "assumed" to be the cost of your meal and the actual cost. Some charges 2 euros for just a dinner roll. Of course if you have already consumed the emal there is nothing you can do but pay up. A simple meal at these tourist traps can run you 15-20 euros plus! Also, many "pasta dishes" are just supermarket microwave dinners with over inflated prices! Pay for your food BEFORE you eat it. Don't get conned by the polite staff into paying after you eat. Stay away from these places, look for places with set menu and check out the food that the people are eating before seating down.

DON'T Book Tours that include dinner + MORE

by JOG1151

As far as dining in Italy with your Tour Group, my general advise would be this...DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT book any OPTIONAL Tours which include dinner. Out of the 9 dinner meals we had in Italy, by far and away the worst meals we had were the ones which were included on the optional tours we paid for with Globus. The 2 different restaurants that we were taken to were what I would call "Typical Tourist Traps"!!! The food was mediocre at best, and it would not surprise me if most of the dishes were frozen and came out of bag. I did a great deal of research about the dining experience in Italy prior to leaving for our trip, and we were fortunate enough to find and enjoy many delicious "LOCAL" "AUTHENTIC" Italian restaurants. I understand that this is a business venture for Globus however, I was honestly offended by the food served in these restaurants. Although they gave you great...

The Guides Around the Colosseum Are Worth Using

by msp132

Ok, so I thought I'd post this in the "tourist trap" section because for a long time I had been warned about joining guided tours not affiliated with the particular attraction -- boy am I glad I didn't listen! When we were in Rome, we walked to the Colosseum expecting to just pay an entrance fee and walk around. When we were approached and asked to join a tour that included both the Colosseum AND the Forum for about 20 EU each, we shrugged and thought "Ok, we'll give it a shot."It was the best decision we made the whole trip. Not only were these guides knowledgeable, they were also extremely entertaining. Our guide for the Forum had a PhD in Roman history and did the tour guide thing on the side for a few extra bucks -- he was amazing. Bottom line: You get so much more out of an attraction if you take a guided tour -- and you'd be surprised how great the "outside" guides really are! And...

"Coperto" Service Charge

by Tobias_Plieninger

If you are in a restaurant in Italy keep the "coperto" in mind! This ammount is added to your bill.It might be up to ten Euro. That depends where you are.In every restaurant with seats you have to pay that.It is unusual to give a tip. You have to pay this there is no way out.Pay it and try to do better next time ... You should keep that in mind.It is usual in every restaurant!Only in take away or fast food restaurant this is not charged.

Ercolano Transport to Mt. Vesuvius

by MonicaLouise

I found the local transport from the Ercolano train station to Mt. Vesuvius to be quite the tourist trap - it is the only mode of transport available so you have no choice. The locals provide a ride via an 8 passenger van and charge 10 Euros per rider for the roundtrip fare. I thought this was quite overpriced and didn't feel comfortable with the driver's skills to boot. He was young and did his best with his limited English to be a tour guide of sorts, but drove fast and reckless being the local that he was. I was happy when this leg of my journey was over.

Gondola Rides

by domino2012

Well, you'll see that this will be something you want to do... HOWEVER: DON'T jump in the first Gondola you see...Why???You can negociate the prices and get the Gondola "drivers" into competition with each other. It can be expensive and they see the tourists coming....Basically, negociate, look around. MAKE SURE to ask where you'll be going and for HOW LONG... rides go from 15 to 45 minutes, so prices change... but it's not worth it if you don't see anything interesting. We took ours in a small canal just off the Grand Canal... 10 euros cheaper and we saw the same things...Even better: get to know some other tourists, it's cheaper when you share with other people... of course if you want to be Romantic and be just the two of you, please do.... if it's just to go on a Gondola Ride, it's interesting to go in a group.

Restaurants near Duomo-What a racket!

by Kaylei

Tourists are often handed flyers with great deals for cheap meals at restaurants right in front of the Duomo. What they don't tell you is that although you can buy a pizza for 5 Euros, you're drink will cost you 15-20. If you find yourslf there order a jug of house wine and share.

expensive basic necessities around Coluseum

by chrissycat

My camera battery ran out and i was desperate to get some batteries, so I bought from one of the vendors beside the coluseum, and i paid twice the amount i should be paying. so pack so extra batteries or whatever you need so that you do not need to buy things in tourist packed places. always charge your camera batteries, phone batteries etc etc before you leave home.
