Grotta del Vento

by sim1

After a scary drive from Borgo a Mozzano (see off the beaten path tips)), I finally got to the 'Grotta del vento' or Wind cave. Hmmmm, I think I should call it a tourist trap. It is nothing spectacular, and not worth the long drive over here. Hahaha, or is it maybe because I had seen too many caves up till now??? I seen quite a few in the previous vacations, and this one couldn't excite me anymore. The one thing I did find interesting is how this cave got its name. The name derives from the violent air current which runs through the cave, due to the presence of two openings which are situated at different levels. The lower opening is situated at 627m. above sea level, and the higher opening is 800m. further up at over 1400m. above sea level. The internal temperature constantly maintains itself at 10,7 degrees centigrade. And that makes the air current during the summer cooler than the...

Giulietta's Balcony Verona

by blint

Well, number one: Romeo and Juliet were fictional characters invented by an Englishman. So how can the balcony belong to Juliet????? Number two: If you look at the balcony it looks very modern. Like they tacked it onto the house when they found out they could trap unsuspecting tourists! The house actually belonged to someone of the same family name as Shakespeare's character, so therefore the tourist board decided to market it as Guilietta's house even though she NEVER existed. No Shakespeare did not write the story based on any real characters in Verona. The only thing it was based on was that family feuding in Italy was common at the time. The whole thing of signing you and your lover's name there for eternal love has to be seen as nonsense too. I mean, Romeo and Juliet were doomed!. Even worse is the idea that if you touch Juliet's breast you will have good luck in love. I think it is...

Venezia

by blint

Venezia is one big tourist trap. It's now designed to trap tourists! Don't get discouraged though, in this case it's worth putting up with the expensive prices and tacky souvenir shops to experience such a beautiful town. If you can't afford to enter the galleries, museums and mansions. Don't worry, the best of venice is actually in the streets and canals! You can stay in Mestre if you want slightly cheaper hotels or if all of Venezia is complete. Though it's not a very pretty train ride to get there through industry. Plus Mestre was where they had a tempory concentration camp while they where deporting jews from Italia.

by croisbeauty

On the Resting places along the highways you might be traped into the story of a very talkative guys who are offering underprice GOLD, CAMERAS etc. Don't be sentimental, their story is always fake one, the gold is probably brass and the cameras are made of gypsum (perfect copy) or wood.If you like brass I cannot help you.

Tourist food.....

by danielinnz

In Siena, although most of the restaurants on the main piazza have the best views, the food is probably nowhere near as good as you will find in the smaller sidestreets. The ones on the piazza are rush in rush out tourist traps. We found a bar on the first floor of a building with a tiny balcony overlooking the piazza. Great place to watch the sunset.

Touristic tram

by elmasri

If you get a map of the city you may get to see the whole city by tram or bus, without spending extra on the turistic tram. One ticket is valid for 90 min so you have plenty of time to go and come back in the same line. I used tram 1 a lot and it seemd quite easy to get from A to B.

Overdone traps in Tuscany

by jayhawk2000

Pisa and San Gimignano...it's so hard to dismiss these places as there is no avoiding them. ANYONE who comes through this part of Italy feels it is their duty to pay a visit (and we were no different).Pisa is one of those cultural monuments that is more impressive in our heads than when right in front of us. In your head you don't see the acres of tacky market stalls. It's all a bit of a letdown. You go inside the walls, say to yourself 'yep, it's leaning' and then feel a bit sheepish taking your obligatory 'look, I'm pushing the tower and holding it up' photo. San Gimi...oversold by the guidebooks and now completely over-run (yes, we added to the crowds, too). Pisa: If you go to Italy and DON'T see Pisa then everyone back home will plague you for years...'Why DIDN'T you go see the leaning tower???' So go see it, but don't make it out in your mind like it's going to be the highlight of...

Walk, don't ride the tram/trolley

by trvlhke

We thought a good way to finish off our to-do list would be to take a hop-on/hop-off trolley around the city. We did the Greenline tour which was 20euro each. IT WAS NOT WORTH IT! There was one bus where the guide spoke in English so there was a little more detail. The other was using head phones. There was only about 1-2 tips per stop, whereas we were picturing something more like the London double decker tour. We didn't think it was helpful and all and cost WAY more then taking the subway to the places we went.

Ask for a photo

by dr.firas

Sure it was good to be 3 in Venice, so every time one of us was making a photo for the 2, but we wanted to make photo of the 3 of us, and here you should be careful as some times a tourist will take a photo fast even without asking you to get ready, like in this one, Marco was not ready yet to look at the camera, best thing for this problem is to check the photo when you have a digital camera and re ask the person to take another one!
