Tourists

by dr.firas

Tourists are gathered and crowded every where in Venice, some times really you can not even walk in the streets because of them, and it is very normal, and every Venice citizen knows this fact, be ready to have difficulties while roaming, and get ready to search for secondary streets to avoid the jams!

Don't feed the Gonadliers !

by sourbugger

Sometimes you can't wriggle out of spending dosh - and if your woman insists on a trip by Gondola then here is your male chauvanists pig's indispensible guide : Here are the tips to keep the price of a gondola trip down:1) Don't go after a rainy day - there is pent up demand.2) Find a quiet canal area with only a couple of gondaliers - they don't want others to know your haggled price.3) Avoid firms with ticket booths etc4) Avoid the Heavily tourist-infested areas. Back canals are more interesting anyway5) Try in the early evening - they may have had a poor day6) Gondaliers will only vary 10-20 euros on their starting price but will change the length of the trip as a bargaining tool.7) When they give a time they will inevitably knock off 10 minutes - take this into account.8) Discuss it man to man - it's better that way trust me. With the fairer sex present they will play on it to make...

well.. in Venice.. this could be a problem..

by Toja

that was really a trap.. when finally we found a rest room in Venice.. another problem.. 45 minutes break because of some sevage problems.. I guess they have a notorious problem with the sevage system there... never believe they will fix it any minute, go somewhere else ;-) hmm.. try to think of something else.. It happened once that one Greek girl asked by a tourist where the rest room was in the hotel... sent him to the hotel restaurant instead :-) A sister of that girl told me this story :-)

Florence - why?

by tobhamor

Having had Florence (Firenze) recommended to me by countless people, I arrived with high hopes of being impressed. Instead I was disappointed in no small measure. I found the city to be dirty, crowded and expensive to the point where we cut our planned five day stay down to three - and would have left a day earlier if we had been able to get earlier timed tickets for the Uffizi gallery. Go to Lucca or go to Pisa or go to Siena - especially Siena. Spend the minimum time you can in Florence.

Venice - Hotel Locanda Sturion

by pata2479

Unless you are a mountain climber, avoid this place! It is reccommended in Karen Brown's book with the note, "this hotel is not on street level".Talk about an understatement! The entrance stairs defy gravity and there is no lift.Dragging suitcases up is quite a feat and the porter "just left" was a common phrase.Staff don't seem to like their job. Suggest you bring along a respirator. Go to the Ala or at least, find out how accessible the hotel is.

AUTOGRILL

by lichinga

This is the name of a chain of quick restaurant / snack bar you will find all along the motorway network.High price in exchange of poor quality. The worst coffee/cappuccino you will ever experience during your stay in Italy, no matter whether it's in the North or in the South. Some of them pretend to sell "local foods": this is partially true, in the sense many products are really original from the area you are passing by, but... prices have nothing to share with real life. It's really a matter of tourists. At least, try to avoid the large "Fini" point close to Modena. That is where most of the Germans (or other Northern European people) stop when they leave/enter Italy when they come from/to the seaside. Highest prices I've ever noticed for those items they are selling.

Stay off the canal in Venice when dining

by drwillis61

Sure the view is great, but save it for coffee breaks. The food is so so and overpriced. Walk down a quiet alleyway and find a place with a small sign out front - away from the market area also. There are some good restaurants right off the main canal on side alleys, but it is better to wonder north of St. Marc's Square to find the small, good places.

The Castello Estense in Ferrara

by Paul2001

This castle as you can see from the photo posted here is quite a sight on the outside however on the inside there is really nothing that exceptional to see. This probably because the castle is still being used for administrative purposes by the local government. Therefore there is little of interest that you can visit on your own. The dungeons are of interest. There are a couple of salons that also deserve a passing glance.

Euros vs. Lires

by Robertvp

Be careful at the cash register. Some stores still show lires as well as euros on their cash register.Less is best. If you do shop at the supermarket take a calculator with you. If in doubt have the sales person write it down.

Napoli - The stings

by iandsmith

Describe the tourist trap? Naples! If you call yourself a traveller, you have to go. This is not your London, Berlin or New York. These guys, trained by the Camora I suspect, know how to hustle and a classic example is the main railway station. No matter how you try to disguise your tourist status, they can spot you a mile off. Two approached us, asked what train we were looking for, dutifully helped us load our bags onto said train and then came the sting.I mean, really, these guys were dressed in railway uniform for heaven's sake! How brazen is that? Learn to say no. Unlike me being sucked in a couple of times. Believe me, they don't take the first "no" as an answer. You've really got to be firm and, when you've just arrived on the SIcily Ferry and the cab drivers nail you, you are vulnerable. I had read all about them before I arrived and still got stung. They know how to work your...
