Cameos and intaglios

by iandsmith

We were taken to one as part of a guided tour of TIvoli that I had paid for, we were fronted by a friendly man in the biggest piazza in Naples who also took us to one. The "one" being a shop that sells cameos. The routine is that once you are lured to the shop there will be a table with tools on it that have the appearance of being used. In those shops, trust me, no-one ever soiled their hands on creating, only on taking your money! They even go so far as to having an old relative sit at a supposed work table. Both the tout and the supposed artisan will disappear before your eyes as the sales pitch eventuates.Included in that pitch will be the line that "ours is unique, all the others are manufactured". Crap. Just like the supposed ceramics factory I visited in Turkey, it's all manufactured elsewhere and they all look the same. Having said all of the above, there are some nice pieces and,...

The coliseum in Pompeii.

by silve64

I'm standing in the coliseum in Pompeii. On the 24th of August, 79 A.D., volcanic ash spews from Mt. Vesuvius. Pompeii and nearby Herculaneum disappear from the face of the earth. Gradually grass and vines cover the land where the town stood. The local people eventually forget even the name of the buried town.Herculaneum was rediscovered in 1738 and Pompeii in 1748.

Be sure of what you are asking for in a bar

by unravelau

Not all bars are like this but in the larger cities like Rome and Naples (after all the only larger cities that I have been in anyway), you need to take note. If you stand at the bar and order and eat ,everything is ok, but if you are on a budget it pays to check out the cost difference between sitting and standing. You can (and I did) pay upwards of 25ml lira (1998) to sit in a bar in Rome to eat a pastry and a cup of coffee for two that would have cost 5ml had I stood at the counter............. Mind you I was so tired it wouldn't have mattered to me had I known anyway. Always ask how much. If you don't wish to ask for comparison prices but are still hungry and thirsty I would go to a deli (is that alimentari?) for a bread roll and some ham and cheese and get a bottle of cold drink while there........find a little park and eat there.

Tourist Heaven

by acemj

Don't take this the wrong way, but the whole country is a trap for tourists! Italy is the #1 tourist destination in the whole world! That's not a bad thing, trust me. However, you might want to avoid the crush of the crowds in the summer months and plan your trip in the off-season. I visited in February and found that I had plenty of room to roam and no lines to wait in!

by pinganille

Italian restaurants and cafés seem to work with different prices... If you choose to sit down at a table instead of standing next to the counter, a fee will be added to your bill. And the fee will be even bigger if you sit outside and if there's music... So don't be surprised if the bill for e.g. a single, simple cup of cappucino seems to have several extra, little fees added!

Watch out for buying souvenirs...

by sandravdp

Watch out for buying souvenirs that are too expensive and not worth it. Watch out for parking too expensive. At Florence (Firenze)you have the chance making too expensive carridge rides (50 dollars for twenty minutes!-but still I love horses and enjoyed the ride) or to be buying overpriced leather jackets against your will (agressive salesmen at the market).

Capri Tour!

by Radiomom

Capri Tour! (accent on both syllables is the same--we Americans say it wrong: CuhPREE. It should be short and quick cap-ree) Anyway, that was how he kept us together...our multinational group of folks, from various points along the Amalfi Coast. It started out sunny and lovely, but as the steamer approached the isle of Capri...it grew ominously grey and misty. I'd hoped we'd be able to ditch the tour and find a lovely sunny spot to sit and soak up extraordinary views and a bit of sun. Sigh. As long as the weather was icky, we stuck with the group. Axel Muethe's villa and gardens were indeed beautiful. The bus ride up to Anacapri was not as harrowing as I'd been led to believe. (we'd been driving the coast and across the mountains between Maiori and the A3 for two days already). HOWEVER, we met a very lovely couple (Ron and Sue Johnson) from Australia who were stuck on the tour with us. I...
