by Millie38

MURANO. Lovely glassware, but very expensive. We naively accepted our hotel's offer of a free boat trip out to see a glass factory on Murano. We were given a flying tour of the workshop, then taken to a warehouse sized showroom and left there while the guide smoked and watched us in silence. We spent about an hour, wandering round, admiring (or giggling at) the glass. We felt utterly obliged to buy something, but nothing was priced. Eventually settled on some Martini glasses - not something we needed, but on our 'nice to have' list. After some muddle over Euros, Lira, and Pounds, we found ourselves paying £416 for 6 glasses! We felt too foolish to say we didn't want them, so arranged to have them shipped back to London, and left hurriedly. The glasses arrived safely, and they are really beautiful, but probably the most expensive mistake I've ever made! My advice is: don't give in to...

gondola rides in venice. they can run up to $100. be careful and choose wisely. It's romantic, but you can get around just as easily on the waterbus.parking in naples. they ask for money and are not really authorized to do so. Pay it anyway or risk damage to your car.Naples - good deals from street vendors. people may approach you in a market or on the street with too good to be true deals. they will suck your money and give you nothing

Lake Garda: Of all the gorgeous Italian Lakes, the most famous is Garda. It is also by far the most dirty. There are few free beaches there and the water is smelly and unclean. It is much better idea to go to one of the nearby smaller lakes. Much nicer

In all the major cities you will see African men who have purses set up on blankets. The purses are knock-offs and they are not legal vendors. When the finance police come by, you will see why the purses are on blankets: they fold up the blanket and take off running.

by Pink_Pash

Stay away from the street vendors who try to sell you imitation Gucci, Chanel, Fendi, or Versce purses. They will sucker in most anyone. They will try to sell you these purses from anywhere like 200 to 100 dollars, and some people do buy. They think it's such a good deal compared to the 1000 dollar and above price they would normally pay that they fall for it. I bought quite a few imitation purses and watches as joke gifts, 'Look, I bought you a Chanel purse and a Gucci watch' at very low prices. Each purse ran me anywhere from 10 to 20 dollars, and the watches from 3 to 5 dollars. I am by no means a haggler extraordinaire, but I guess I was lucky. Hold out to nighttime, when they're desperate to sell, then the prices are lower and they are willing to negotiate with you. Never go alone though, they will follow you through a crowd for quite a distance if you stop by, haggle, but don't...

Vatican City: huge tourist trap but worth it. Get in queue early, bring a book and water.Venice: No place like it in the world. Do not go in summer when it smells and there are way too many people. Go in fall, early spring or even winter. Much more enjoyable then. If going in winter, don't miss Carnavale. Unbelievable.

Portofino-yes, it's very expensive village for all the beautiful people to look at each other but it still is charming. I would most definitely not recommend staying there but for an afternoon visit, si. The pastel-colored buildings glow in the late afternoon Mediteranean sunshine.
