Eurailpass Supplements on Italian train
We frequently discuss here on VT how Eurailpasses are not a bargain within Italy.

One reason is that to use the Eurailpass on a 'premium' train, you must not only get a reservation in advance, but also pay a supplement (which includes the reservation fee). Regional (i.e., local) trains do not require this supplement.

To figure out whether a Eurailpass is worth the cost, you need to generally plan out your trip using www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html . Note the fares for the various types of trains. Then note that if you have a Eurailpass, you will have to pay the supplements listed below over and above the pass on all 'premium' trains.

"Supplements in Italy
Surcharges and/or reservation costs are required for these domestic day trains:
Eurostar Italia - 1st and 2nd class: € 15 (approx. USD 22,20 / AUD 8,75)
Eurostar Italia AV - 1st and 2nd class: € 20 (approx. USD 29,60 / AUD 35)
EurostarCity Italia - 1st and 2nd class: € 15 (approx. USD 22,20 / AUD 26,25)
TBiz - 1st and 2nd class: € 25 (approx. USD 37,00 / AUD 43,75)
InterCity Plus - 1st and 2nd class: € 5 (approx. USD 7,40 / AUD 8,75)
EC/IC Internazionali (domestic journeys) - 1st and 2nd class: € 5 (approx. USD 7,40 / AUD 8,75)
Cisalpino (domestic journeys) - 1st and 2nd class: € 5 (approx. USD 7,40 / AUD 8,75)
Artesia de Jour (domestic journeys) - 1st and 2nd class: € 5 (approx. USD 7,40 / AUD 8,75) "
(see www.eurail.com/1_reservations_supplements_domestic)

You also might want to review www.eurail.com/1_train_reservations

But the regional trains don't take reservations at all, so you can just go to the station and hop on the train with your pass and go...of course, there is a small chance you might stand or sit in a pull-down seat in the aisle, but that's all part of the adventure...;-)

    plane, train, bus....
i found the trains (coming from england) incredibly cheap and pretty much on-schedule, don't forget to check for student or group discounts which aren't really advertised but they give to 'groups' of four or more travellers.

    Alitalia Airlines
Alitalia Airlines is the MOST incompetent, worst airline that I have ever flown. Out of four flights, not one flight managed to take off on time. Most times, they were so late that they caused us to miss our next connecting flight.

Not only this, but once we missed our flight and had to be re-ticketed for another flight, they didn't manage to move the rest of our reservations to the new flight allowing our return home to be cancelled!

They also lost our bags! The first time, they lost it for five days although I have proof that it was actually in the possession in Rome, they just would not allow me to pick it up nor would they deliver it to us.

Also lost my luggage on the way back but thanks to Continental Airlines, I was able to recover this one within two days time.

Extremely rude and obnoxious people to deal with at this airline. There was only one person who treated us in a nice manner.

    Alitalia
Alitalia Airlines....my advice is to NEVER use this airline, even if it is a more economical ticket.

Every flight that we had took off late causing us to miss every connecting flight and then having to go back to ticketing and get re-issued.

Also, when they re-ticketed, they forgot to bring the remainder of trip information over so all of my return flights got cancelled. I showed up at the airport to fly home and was told that I have no reservation! Then my daughter and I have to make a full day flight with one of us in the front of the plane and one of us in the back!

Luggage lost on trip from US to Rome. Told everyday for five days that it had been found and would be delivered by courier that day. I offered to go and pick it up at the airport but was told this was not possible because the courier had it. Confirmed that luggage was actually shipped from Milan to Rome the next day. However, it took Alitalia in Rome 5 days to finally decide to get our luggage delivered to us.

Luggage lost on trip home. Alitalia simply forgot to put the luggage on the plane! Arrived home with no apartment keys, no car keys, etc. Filed a lost baggage claim. Contacted the next day saying that the luggage would arrive that day. Luggage does not arrive. Thanks to Continental Airlines assistance, finally received luggage the second day.

Never again!!! To plan a vacation for one year and be so stressed out the entire time is just not worth it.

    Cheap flights in Winters
I would like to share about the cheap flights I got for this trip. 6 flight tickets for 120 euros. Unbelievable deals on Ryan air if you travel in off season. We travelled just after new years on 6th January I think from Oslo to Pisa. Then from Rome to Venice we flew again as the tickets were just 10 euros a piece, then back from Pisa to Oslo

Ofcourse this is back in 2007, since the the taxes, fuel surcharges have increased. But the bottomline is if you are on budget winters are the best time to fly on ryan air

From the U.S. try going through London
On a trip from the U.S. you might save money by purchasing a cheap round-trip ticket to London first, and then using the European airfare seller E-Bookers.com to find a cut-rate onward flight to Rome. We would have saved a bundle if we had known this before our trip.
