by sargentjeff

You will most likely fly into one of the major airports. Train stations are usually accesible by bus or within walking distance. Cabs are an option, but of course are more costlyI've created a Travelogue entitled Traveling around Italia with more info and pictures of things you will see while driving in Italy.Getting around Italy can be quite a challenge for the unaccustomed driver. Be careful in big cities if you drive. Be very defensive. Many Italians are very aggressive, and will take more risks, such as sudden lane changes and tailgating at high speeds. Flashing headlights is also a way of saying 'get outta my way'. A left turn signal constantly on in the fast lane means I want to pass you, pull over.Expect to see lots of signs, especially in cites. There are often numerous signs at one intersection pointing the direction to every hotel, restaurant, city, etc...Many gas stations are...

by beluga

Between Genova and La Spezia, the fasted mode of transportation is by train - the tracks are led through a series of tunnels carved out in the rocks. Travelling by car is certainly possible in this area but takes quite a lot of time near the coast. So from one coastal village to the next might be just 5 minutes by train and more 30-45 mins by car. However, a boat trip is more fun - and fairly quick as well.

From mainland Europe the overnight trains are an excellent way of travelling a long distance relatively painlessly. The one to Rome via Florence ranks joint second with the Swiss overnighters, behind Germany, but ahead of the Czech Republic!Ha ha ha!!! Driving in Italy isn't as bad as it's meant to be, and once you know what to expect it's a doddle, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

Fly to Milan and travel from there, or from LuganoHere's some more info. on how to get to Bellagio by public transport - Milan to Bellagio via Como -take a train from Milan Centrale or Ferrovie Nord station to Como. OR, take a cab to the boat terminal. (It is possible to walk the distance in 10 minutes if your luggage is not burdensome). Take aboat or a hydrofoil to Bellagio. Travel time: boat 2 hours, hydrofoil 40 min. cost- boat $4.13, hydrofoil $6.22.But if you have a group - and I brought a group of 24 here, there is a special company called PINI International that will charge for a car, mini-bus, or bigger bus. This was expensive but worth it since we were tired. Try pini@pini.inet.it

We were already in Europe, so we took the Eurorail from Switzerland to Rome. Not too bad- we had sleeping compartments. BEWARE::: the day we were supposed to leave, the train conductors just up and decided they were going to strike that day. We had to sit in the Milan train station for several hours, along with many others, and we were all scrambling to find any type of train that was going even Remotely near the direction we were going. We barely made it out of there!

by ukirsari

I visit Italy by airplane and landed at Linate Airport, Milan (Milano), then choose the train; from Milano Centrale to Venezia Santa Lucia. By the route; Milan, Bari, Parma, Padova, Treviso, Venezia Mestre then Venezia Santa Lucia (for night train, if you got asleep, maybe in the morning you can find yourself at Zagreb, Croatia :) ). Around Venezia, after the train trip is ended at Venezia Santa Lucia, you can use bus at the canal (Canale Grande) then gondola (around the rio). There's the only one 'canal' and another (smaller) we can say as 'rio'. You can start your trip from Ferrovia harbor, in front of Chiesa San Simeon Piccolo.

by Pink_Pash

I flew into Italy from London Stanstead. I don't know how true this is, but I heard that the best wat to travel to Italy is if you fly into London Heathrow and then take a flight on Go airlines. It was very price effective for me. I took a National Express bus out of the Golder's Green tube stop to London Stanstead (nice comfy ride). Once at Stanstead I boarded my flight to Marco Polo Airport in Venice on Go airlines and was there in about two hours. The type of transportation you utilize in Italy depends on what city or town you are visiting, and at what time of the day. In Venice obviously, your feet are your best bet, though you could use a vaporetto to move from one canal bank to the other. A tronchetto is also another option. In cities like Rome and Milan, the best way to get around is the underground, become very familiar with the routes, it's very important. Florence and Pisa have...

Highways and Roads...

by yeah_baby

Highways and Roads HighwayThere is an extensive and well maintained road network. Tolls are charged on the autostrade (highways). As in the rest of continental Europe, vehicles travel on the right and overtake on the left. The wearing of seatbelts is compulsory for front and back seat passengers as well as for the driver. The use of portable telephones is prohibited if they require intervention by hand to function.Gasoline is called benzina, unleaded gasoline is benzina senza piombo and diesel is gasolio. Almost all the service stations in the country are equipped with pumps for lead-free gasoline (95 octane) and diesel fuel. Bicycles-Italy, country of vehicles and motors, has also a great tradition in cycling. From unpaved streets to the historical successes of Coppi and Bartali and Moser's speed records, Italian cycling has experienced a technical evolution due to extensive research in...
