Strikes in Italy are not...

by feline01

Strikes in Italy are not uncommon and can happend at anytime. I was travelling from Firenze to Zurich on an overnight train with a friend from Switzerland. Our train stops at 2am in the middle of a field. The announcer comes on and says something rapidly in Italian (of course). Now my friend just finished an 8-week program studying Italian in Firenze and she had no idea what was said but we got the gjist when everyone began gathering their belongings and leaving the train. It was an unexpected strike. So we gathered our backpacks and joined them. We walked across a field of something mushy to some buses that were parked alongside a country road. The buses took us to the Swiss border where we were able to climb aboard one of the wonderful Swiss trains. We arrived safely in Zurich several hours late but heh, isn't this what travelling is all about-adventure?

Driving is fun but gas...

by feline01

Driving is fun but gas (petrol) is very expensive and tolls on the Autostrada are astronomical. Bring a debit card of credit card for refilling the gas tank because most gas stations are closed at night and even weekends in smaller towns but you can fill the tank yourself as long as you have a credit/debit card. Trains are a terrific way to get around but strikes still occur occasionally and you can find yourself kicked off a train suddenly because of a strike. Be flexible and just ask some locals what to do.

by aliante1981

With major international airports in many cities (Milan, Rome and Venice at least come to mind) you should have no difficulties in getting to Italy by air. I took train to Milan from Geneva, but evidently it was a wrong day. There was a railway accident and all the trains were late. I was pretty impressed when at the departure I was told how much late we will be :)))

Train is very easy but beware(they are often very full and sometimes very hot)Busses are a good way.Try to tell the driver where you need to get off because they drive so fast, odds are you won't see your stop as it goes by.

by lengyelp

Be very-very careful with trains. It is true that the railway system is quite good and cheap. But! The problem is there is a strike every one or two weeks. Don't worry, generally it lasts only a day, maybe two, but if you want to travel somewhere at that time... you are stuck. Buses cannot be used as an alternative means of transport, as they normally serve only the surroundings ot the towns where no train goes. After some time you learn to go to the station some two days before your planned travel, and see if there will be any strike. If so, you will have to change your plans. The problem starts when you arrive to Italy and at the very first station you find out you can't proceed. When you buy a railway ticket be sure to validate it before you get on the train. There are yellow machines everywhere in the station. Just put the end of the ticket there and it will stamp the date, the time...

How to get here....... car, flyght, boat, moto and.....why not? Elephant may be, someone did it many years ago and he created a sort of big problem for the old 'good' RomansI don't like driving, but I must admitt that in Italy, once out of the main cities, trasports could not be the best, at least they won't be so frequent.Train is almost good to move around the main areas, for more information www.trenitalia.com

For Italy in General:We flew into Venice, which was great because you see the water and the islands as you come in. Plus, we were staying in Verona, so the train ride out of Venice was beautiful as well.I would recommend taking trains and buses all around Italy. They are really nice about helping you find which route is best for you. But they don't always keep a strict schedule, so don't plan on being everywhere on time!
