By air is the quickest.

by Vickster

It's easy to hire a car and drive yourself, but equally easy - and affordable - to use the buses or trains. For longer journey from the north to the south of the country it might be preferable to fly, but you won't 'discover' all the exciting places en-route.

Trains. All over Europe they are great. On time, clean, efficient... then you enter Italy. Honestly it is a laugh! I still can't believe we had to pay a supplement on our first class ticket, for the privelige of sitting on the floor. Try to work that out!!

by ricknkat

we got a nice cheap flight on Lufthansa, which had a short layover in Frankfurt, but was really a good way to get there. Much better than Alitalia (where you might die of thirst/ hunger waiting for a flight attendant...)trains are great, although they were on strike for two days when we were there, which made things a little interesting.

I arrived at Florence by train, i was coming from Munich. It´s a greta way to arrive to Florence because the train station is very well situated, a few blocks away of the downtown and several hotels and pensions. The airport is ok ... there´s a train that takes you there from Roma termini in 20 minutes. From Florence to Rome we also travelled by train.

Hired car . with hired car you can find out all the charming and not spoiled places .driving around on the small roads can get you to a beatifull places and nice nature reservations , restaurants , and family hotels or farms .Geting around is easy and signs are cleared and helpfull.the roads are well maintained .There is a known stigma about the italian drivers but I found them a very good drivers and if you try to go with the unwritten Italian 'rules ' it's possible to get along and even enjoy.

by Chuck_Cotten

I arrived in Naples from Gatwick airport in the UK. There are no direct fights from the US but you can get to Naples from Pairs, Milan or UK fairly easily. If you plan to see the sights in and around Naples forget about getting a car. The driving is insane and there is no where to park. Cabs are fairly cheap. In getting to other regions in Italy check out www.fs-on-line.com/ for train tickets. Dont buy them here in the states unless you would like to pay 3 times the amount. The rail system is safe, clean and runs on a reliable schedule. Busses to areas outsideNaples are also reliable and affordable.

by Chuck_Cotten

There are no direct flights to Naples from the US but if you transfer through Gatwick in the UK or Paris, you can connect. Rome is the main hub and the Naples airport is very small. You can take a train from Rome and I am told by friends that did so that its clean, reasonable and on time. To get around Naples, take cabs or get a scooter if your fearless and have had some solid experience on 2 wheels. Driving and parking in Naples are a nightmare. You can walk but its very hilly in many places and its not worth getting all sweatty if you can just jump a cab. They do charge a surcharge for luggage and late night fares but I found it to be fairly reasonable. If your going to the Almafi coast, you can take a bus but we decided to rent a car. If your use to driving in a big city with lots of hills (San Francisco is the best training ground I know of) you will be ok, if your a timid or nervous...
