Lowcost train

by kenadams

TrenOK is the new lowcost train service provided by Trenitalia, the national rail company. It serves Rome (Tiburtina station), Florence (Campo di Marte) and Milan (Rogoredo) for just 9 euros between any of those three cities. Note that the stations used are not the primary ones in those cities. The trains are highspeed ETR-450, converted from Eurostar service into TrenOK. Check the website provided below.

Take the train

by nighthawk

To spare my husband from driving all throughout Italy we did some daytrips by train. Was not too expensive and trains ran on time.Desenzano train station was easy to find and had not too many parking spaces for the car, further away were more spaces so we just opted for a walk.

Trenitalia.com is the Italian railway company web-site. There you can check the time of departure or arrivals of the trains you're going to take. Moreovers there you'll find lots of info about trains in Italy and also several special offers about trains tickets.Note; don't forget to validate your train ticket before the journey in the yellow machines at the train station, otherwise you will get fined.

Greatest tour guide we could have asked for

by chrisedw

Giorgio Dell'Artino was our tour guide. He is very good in explaining the sights in English. Our first stop was the Hotel Bernini Bristol in Rome. Very nice accomodations. The bar/restaurant on the top floor offered wonderful sunset views. Giorgio got us tickets for the AS Roma vs Inter Milan soccer match that evening. Great seats and a wonderful game. Rome was the winner.Excellent next 3 days in Rome visiting the Pantheon, Colosieum, Vatican, with many excellent meals in between. He really knows the area. Our bus driver was Francesco who was a great driver and very courteous. We then moved on to Sorrento with a stop in Pompeii on the way to see the ruins. Sorrento was our home base for the next three days. It is a neat city on the coast overlooking Pompeii and Mount Veseveus. One day we took a trip down the coast to Amalfi and Positani. Two great towns with lots to see and do. The next...

Sardinia – Corsica – Rome

by Martini77

Car travelling: Sardinia – Corsica – Rome Without a car, serious transportation on these islands is not possible. In the Alghero airport there are several rent offices. The best conditions were in Hertz. Taking into consideration the serious discount, that was made for me, rent of the diesel Ford C-Max for 10 days cost only 246 euro (!) with standard insurance and opportunity to visit France by ferry. I have rented a car via credit card beforehand in USA with help from Booking Group company (www.economybookings.com).It is necessary to be attentive to the working time of the rental service – usually it's from 8:00 till 23:00. That is why there can be some problems with late or early flights. Hertz works till 24:00 in summer, so despite of short flight delay, I have managed to take the car at 23:45. Returned at 6:00 thru the drop box. By the way, filling stations at night work in...

RAILEUROPE pass NOT advisable to use in Italy:

by ilovenewjersey

I would like to share my bad experience with RAILEUROPE pass in Italy. First, unlike other countries that I've been to, I don't remember paying 10 euros, or a need to make reservations when traveling within a Country. Specially when there are trains running every hour to major Cities in Italy. The train schedule for NO reservations fee are BAD with lots of connections. You'll end up paying triple-- with the price you paid in advance for the Eurorail pass, plus the reservations fee. BUY your train tickets in Italy, it's cheaper and hustle free.Second, I'm not in any apologetic mood to say this but most tellers of the ticketing office in the train stations are Rude, impolite, and arrogant, when I think they're the ones who are in the front line in their Country's tourism industry, they should be nice, accommodating , and friendly. We were there during a Low-season, I couldn't imagine what...

train travel

by lynee

just got back from travelling in Italy alone by trains, yes the automatic ticket machines have an english option ( but sometimes you need to try a few to get one that takes cash, you can buy your ticket the day before ( follow the step by step instuctions ) I travelled mostly by the regional trains ,. It is a good idea to research on www.trenitalia.com site first so you know whch train to select and you know what price the ticket will be, (hint when on site click "all solutions " which appears at bottom left of screen). Make sure you select 2nd class if that is what you want and base fare. also make sure you validate ticket, just before you get on train at the little yellow mchine at entrance to platform. If I did it anyone can , but I did take a little translation book with me.

trains

by lynee

I am travelling through Italy at present, I check out the trains on Trentitalia website then just go to the station and buy what I need at the machine, you can chose english and you can buy for the next day, a regional ticket lasts for 6 hours from when you validate it . Check your spelling as all are spelt the Italian way, allow some extra time as some machines don't work and you need to choose another (especially at bigger stations)
