LeNORD (Transportation Out of Milano)

by samanthasian

When taking the train, make sure to look up the times you can go. I always seemed to miss the train by literally 2 minutes, and you will be stuck waiting there for another half hour if you miss it.Also, do not take the train too late at night. Sketchy people will be on the train. I had an encounter early on in my stay, but luckily, I was with a friend.Especially if you are a girl, be careful if you are traveling alone. Italian men are very forward. Ignore them if they try to engage in a conversation with you. What you might see as polite, might come off as permission for them to continue talking, etc. Just act uninterested and don't make eye contact.

Malpensa International Airport

by traveldave

When I visited Italy in 1982, I did not fly into the country, but rather entered and traveled around Italy by bus. However, I recently made a connection through Milan's Malpensa International Airport (MXP) to continue on to Madrid. Malpensa International Airport is northern Italy's major international gateway, with flights to many cities in Europe, North America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The airport is 28 miles (45 kilometers) to the northwest of downtown Milan.Airlines serving Malpensa International Airport: Aegean Airlines, Aer Lingus, Aeroflot-Russian Airlines, Air Alps, Air China, Air Europa, Air France, Air Italy, Air Malta, Air Mauritius, Air Moldova, Air Seychelles, airBaltic, Alitalia, Alitalia Express, American Airlines, Atlas Blue, Austrian Airlines, Azerbaijan Airlines, Belavia Belarusian Airlines, Blue1, Blue Panorama Airlines, British Airways, Bulgaria Air, Cathay...

Venice to Rome: plain or train?

by microsensazione

I usually consider flights only for distances over 600km.That's usually the "cut off distance" in terms of costs and time spent we use in my work company (I travel a lot all around Italy). So I'd suggest to consider train from Venice to Rome: 73 euro/person and you'll arrive in Rome within four hours. Venice-Rome is about one hour of flight but you have also to consider the transfer to Venice Airport, check-in and safety operations, landing operations in Rome, luggage claim after being landed and so on.Summarizing I think by plain you don't gain more than one hour against train usage.Have you tested well low cost flights fares? This is because low cost companies are very interesting but they restrict too much your maximum luggage weight so you "go in overweight" (always my nightmare :D ) and your low cost becomes a medium cost!!!You have also to consider taxes fares so your flight...

Difference between traghetti vaporetti and gondole

by microsensazione

Hello!Very interesting discussion about traghetti, vaporetti and gondole! If you consider the pure definition of traghetto you could say:vaporetto = traghettogondola = traghettonave (ship) is not a traghetto...Anyway, the common idea we have in Italy is:- TRAGHETTO = ferry (Traghetti = ferries)- VAPORETTO is smaller than Traghetto and it NEVER transports vehicles. Vaporetto is used to identify public transporters only in Venice; on lakes we always say "traghetto"; anyway somebody, not properly, says "vaporetto" also on lakes...- GONDOLA is the typical romantic boat of Venice.Wikipedia helps us with some images.Traghetto: http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/TraghettoVaporetto: http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/VaporettoGondola: http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/GondolaHave fun with Italian language! ;)Fabrizio

From Spoleto to Siena without car

by microsensazione

Are you thinking to reach Siena from Spoleto and you don't have a car?Well, I find:Train: Spoleto (5.29) -> Perugia (6.37)Bus: Perugia (9.00) -> Siena (10.20)...not so good.Anyway, I alert Siena is often very crowded on August 15th. This is because on August 16th there is the most important "Palio" competition known in Italy: "Palio di Siena" ( http://www.ilpalio.org/palioenglish.htm ).I usually avoid to move around the town with car or buses during those days...Fabrizio

Gondola in Venice

Gondola tripIts a bit expensive. 80 euro for abour 30-40 minutes. You will enjoy the sights along the canal accompanied with singing by the driver. However, I suggest taking the gondola near places of interests.

Drive through Italy

by Ernie44

Trains are nice but having a car you can go to places that the train won't take you to. My wife and I rented a car a drove all over northern Italy, there are a number of places you can see by car like some of the smaller towns and villages. Take your time and enjoy some of the most beautiful sights Italy has to offer. Have a safe and wonderful trip.

North of Italy: highways and traffic

by microsensazione

Ingrid (VT name "Trekki") has called in my mind an important notice about traffic in Northern Italian highways! She told she found traffic on a Saturday of June going to Innsbruck from Reggio Emilia.About that remember this thing: June, July and August weekends are often critical about traffic on A4 highway and all the highways along the borders with Slovenia, Austria, Switzerland and France. Traffic decreases (not so much) on weekdays of the same three months. I don't have statistics about but when I drive there (I drive a lot on A4 highway) I find traffic 15% decreased. There are other critical periods of traffic during year:- after January 1st- around January 6th- before and after Easter Day- around April 25th- around May 1st- around June 2nd- sometimes August 15th and days after- around December 8th- before December 25thTo be informed in real time about highways traffic situation in...

Trenitalia website and discounts

by milliturtle

Trenitalia offers 2 types of discounts for early booking of certain fast trains: meno 30 (at least 15 days in advance) and meno 15 (at least 7 days in advance). Basically, you get 30% discount with meno 30 and 15% discount with meno 15.We booked the Rome to Florence Eurostar AV train online more than 1 month ahead and we managed to book the meno 30 rate without much problem. Then we went back to try to book the Bologna to Milan tickets and the system kept saying our credit card was denied. After 3 tries, the system locked our account. We tried with a different credit card, same problem. We called the credit card company and they said that they have no records of Trenitalia actually putting through the transaction! So, we weren't able to take advantage of the meno 30 rate for the other leg of our trip. We picked the ticketless option and were emailed our confirmation code. You'll need to...
