Train Travel in Italy

by nmeade09

If you are looking for an easy way to get around Italy, I would suggest using the train especially if you're traveling from one city to the next. For my trip I purchased a train pass which allowed me to travel for 5 days within a month (There are many options available). Be aware though that the pass does not cover the cost for reservations. For me, this was about $15 or so. Obviously the cost is more for the express trains versus the local trains. It was very easy to use.

public transport

by Greatje

Try to figure out how the subway's and trains schedules are. This can safe you a lot of money and time. Also in Naples, they have the "Funicolare" a small train/subway that goes up and down the Vomero hill from three or four different places

getting to lake garda from milan

by rkearns

hmm. well i found this on about.comTransportation to and from Lake Garda:There are train stations in Desenzano and Peschiera del Garda in the south. In the north the closest station to the lake is in Rovereto, east of Riva del Garda. The closest airports are in Verona and Brescia. The closest large airport is Milan Malpensa. See Italy Airports Map. The A4 autostrada between Milan and Venice runs south of the lake. Along the east is the A22, Brennero to Modena autostrada.Lake Garda Transportation - Getting Around the Lake:Lake Garda is well served by hydrofoils, catamarans, and ferries, especially during summer. Car ferries between the western and eastern shores run between Toscolano Maderno and Torri del Banaco and between Limone and Malcesine. Public buses run all around the lake. here is where you find the prices and time tableshttp://www.ferroviedellostato.it/it looks like one way...

Follow the signs. You shouldn't have any problems getting lost. Ton of flight options to so many other countries. I've made a ton of connections here. Great way station after a long trip.Easy hop to North Africa or Eastern Europe.

Getting to/from Paestum

by jefffilms

Paestum is a unique and awesome place to visit. I don't think that there are many other places where you'll find Greek temples surrounded by a ruined Roman town. It's well worth the trip. I do find it interesting though that it's a bit like a forgotten child. Similar to much of Campania, signs and general convenience could be better. The train is quite a distance from the site and the bus is slow going. This information should not discourage, just plan ahead.Don't skip the museum. There are great frescoes in amazing condition...

Taxi From Naples Central

by jefffilms

If you plan on taking a cab from Napoli Centrale, walk directly out the front doors and past the guys inside asking if you want a cab. They'll charge you triple the cost of a real cab, which you can catch right outside the station to the left. It's very easy. Don't get frazzled by the reputation of this station. If you look like you know where you're going, you won't get hassled. I stayed in Napoli for a week and was in and out of the station and never had a problem.

Finding cheap regional trains in Italy

by mccalpin

Cheap transportation in Italy means regional trains. So go to my Italy page where I describe how to use the Trenitalia website (national railroad - about 95% of trains nationwide) and also see the Transportation Tips at the bottom of that page where I go into more details.Note that the Trenitalia website gives solutions, not all possible trains. If A to B has a bunch of direct trains, the website may or may not give you additional trip solutions using connecting trains. This is true even if you use the "All Solutions" button (you'll see it when you ask for a trip solution for A to B). Using this button may increase the number of trip solutions provided, but it won't give you all of them, since, after all, the website has to draw the line somewhere.Regional trains are operated primarily in a region (duh). Thus, relatively few regional trains go long distances. Thus, to get from A to B,...

Links for train travel with wheelchair

by mccalpin

Most train travel in Italy requires walking up steep steps on the train, but there are a few trains and train stations that are nominally wheelchair friendly. Please note that what I am going to tell you is based solely from the Trenitalia website (the national railroad), so you'll want to take it with a grain of salt...note that this was originally a forum reply for Livorno to Pisa, but the links will be invaluable everywhere.http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=fb9011e84819a110VgnVCM1000003f16f90aRCRDhas information for wheelchair passengers.More information on the "Blue Hall" for disabled passengers:http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=052ff172e719a110VgnVCM1000003f16f90aRCRDSee http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=dadc82b0368ea110VgnVCM1000003f16f90aRCRDfor a listing of facilities of stations in Tuscany, including Livorno and Pisa...

Grandi Navi Veloci ferry cruises

by Aloe9678

Perhaps I set my hopes too high for this trip, but I took the Excelsior from Barcelona to Genova, because after being land-locked in Iraq for 14 months I thought being on the water would be nice. Well, nothing was open on this particular voyage. The beauty salon/spa looked like it hadn't been open in about a year, the pool wasn't open, I kept being told there was trouble with the wi-fi and then would see other people using it, and there wasn't a lot of information available on what actually WAS open and what services WERE actually available. However, I will give one of the bartenders credit for making a great margarita out of what didn't actually look to be regular margarita ingredients. Otherwise, not a trip I plan on making again.
