Bozen from Cable car. by dabidc Bozen is on the main rail line and main road from Verona to Innsbruck, it is well worth visiting in its own right. It is also a good center for visits to at least three valleys that connect to or are close to Bozen. The first is the valley of the Adige, which as I found out connects to Austria at Landeck, to Switzerland through Scuol and one can reach Merano easily and hence north from there to the Austrain border and the location where the Oetzi man was found. There is a bus service to the Val di Fassa which originates in Bozen and connects with the main bus service to the Val di Fassa which originates in Trento. Finally at least to my knowledge there is access to the Val gardena to the N.E of Bozen. The connection is possibly best made by train to Bressanone and then bus to the small towns, St Ulrich and Selva. For those travelling by car or tour bus there are some excellent routes to the east that follow the many passes between Bozen and Cortina D'Ampezza. Without doubt there are many other fine places to visit in his area. Any research that I did for these journeys was before access to VTand the excellent ideas that members have taken the time to complete pages.
A fascinating, historic city with an interesting central area, especialliy the arcades near the Duomo. Leave a Comment

by worldtrekker Take the cable tram up to the Gruppo di Sella near the mountain, Marmolada. If you have time and are fit, you can also hike up! The Gruppo di Sella is encircled by mountain roads. So, if you're looking at a road atlas to find this place, look for a road that is a circle. That dot of a person in the pic is my brother standing on a ledge with some steep drop-offs on both sides... This is only a few minutes walk from the tram station. Leave a Comment

The things for sale in the shops in Bolzano aren't cheap but some of the kitchen equipment is of an extremely high standard. There seem to be lots of craftsman made knives. I bought a parmesan cheese grater - the grater bit sits on a wooden box, so after grating you can shake the cheese out. I use it several times a week and it still looks good. Cost about 30 Euro but worth every penny. Ours was from Schoenhuber Franchi. Leave a Comment

Il Municipio by croisbeauty Il Municipio (the Town Hall), situated at beautiful Piazza Municipio, was designed in neo-Baroque style and erected in 1907. The front facade of the building, and the one that is situated next to it, is nicely coloured with the ornaments. Too bad I didn't take the picture of it under the day light. Leave a Comment

Piazza Walther by croisbeauty The Main Square of Bolzano nowadays is called Piazza Walther (von der Vogelweide), after German troubadour, however untill 1814 it was called Johannsplatz. The monument of Walther stands right in the middle of the square.
The busy and very spacious Piazza Walther is the centre of the city. Leave a Comment

by AndreasK On Saturday mornings I love my cup of coffee at the City Cafe (see picture) at Walther Square in Bolzano and enjoy reading my German and Italian newspapers (in northern Italy, quite a few newspapers are in German). Leave a Comment
