 | Bolzano Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 10 of 44 | | I use a map of any area as a mian source of information, I can usaully orient myself to the places to visit and know how to get there. besdes when you do not know the language it is often difficult to make youreself undeerstood or to understand what the local people have to say. I searched for the cable car station some time before I spotted it on the east side of the road and close to the Rail tracks as they headed north to the Brenner pass. I took the cable car to the heights on the north side above Bozen and found another world, one far removed form the busy life in the city below. I walked around and took some photos of the mountains on all sides. To the N.E were the mountains near Val Gardena, to the S.E there was a valley leading to Val di Fassa and way to the south and west the higher ground that sheltered Bozen from the west winds. . There is a bus service along the Val di Fassa, the service originates in Trento. I travelled from Pozza to Canazei, which appears to be the largest village in the valley. It is well served by hotels, cafes and shops. The plan was to take the cable car to Col di Rosc, to walk and or take photos. The path to the Rifugio Belvedere was easy going but with wet snow in places. The weather allowed several photos to be taken and I ended up with a panorama of views. These will follow. Hopefully the clear sky was a sign that a few days spent in the mountains could be accomplished with some success. The Hotel Adria is located across from the bus station so I should be able to get the correct pass that would get me to the next valley. I would say farewell to the mountains surrounding Bozen and reach a valley that would be even more enclosed by higher ground. Leave a Comment

Bozen city lies in a sheltered spot in the valley completely surrounded by mountains. It is not until you reach higher ground that you get to see those mountains. The photo looking N.E shows the mountains towards the Val Gardena, I am not very familiar with what is visible, howevere I believe the three spires could be Alpe de Tires with part of Sasso Lungo beyond. Castel Mareccio is situated adjacent to Bolzano ( Bozen ) city park, and is just off the hiking bicycle / foot trail going toward Castel Roncolo. The castle is surrounded by wine vinyards. It is another fascinating medieval fortress that is very well preserved. It is located on the valley floor, which is unusual for fortresses. The interior has been renovated into a lavish convention center. Guided tours are given Tuesdays only in German and Italian. Based on the architectural style, I would guess the age of Castel Mareccio to be between 750 and 900 years. Please correct me if my guess is wrong. Located on Via Claudia de'Media Bolzano is a fascinating, surprisingly friendly, and clean city. I enjoyed my four hours there. Leave a Comment

Castel Roncolo from inside the ramparts. This well preserved 750 year old Tyrolean fortress is fascinating. It will truly transport you back to the time of chivalrous knights in armor. Here you see some of the many original paintings depicting the lives of Tyrolean knights. Most are in excellent condition, and are considered the best such surviving paintings in the world. If you visit during the Summer you can enjoy a medieval feast while watching mock but realsitic looking jousting tournaments and other reanactments. See my previous Castel Roncolo tip for directions to the castle. Warning; I visited in May when the drawbridge is raised early. Leave a Comment

Castel Roncolo, or Schloss Runkelstein was first built in 1237, rebuilt in 1385 and restored various times. It is made up of three buildings This castle is well known for its frescoes. in fact many inner walls are decorated with frescoes painted from 1385. Most of the frescoes are in good state. These describe scenes from public games, knights in armours or have literary themes suche as Tristan and Isolde. Castel Roncolo hasn't a museum inside, but there you can surely find a temporary exibition. Inside one of the buildings of the castle there is a nice cafe-restaurant. Leave a Comment

The monument that honours the casualties of the Big World War is situated on very beautiful square, just a foot from the cathedral. The Italians pay a lot of attention to those who died in the wars combated for the patria. Leave a Comment

Here is a map with suggested hiking trails in the Dolomite mountains. Each of the trails is several days long, some will take up to 15 days. All of them start in the north and will lead you south. Late July I will start my first hike; friends suggested I should start at Lago di Braies, and hike south along the high route 1, through the Pragser, Tofana, and Civetta mountain groups (see dark blue line, ending in Belluno; click on the map to enlarge). We will find accommodation along the trail in several mountain lodges (huts), so we don't have to carry neither a tent, nor a sleeping bag, nor do we have to bring our own food along...
