    Treat yourself

It's just nice on occasions while skiing on a clear day to stop and reflect at how lucky you are just to be in that place at that time. Standing on a mountainside with much of the visible world below you is one of the other treats of skiing/

    Beyond the towers

Were you to go beyond the towers and fall over the edge, you'd land near Trento, one of my favourite Italian towns. You'd also be a bit stupid, but that's another story.
This is the view from the top station La Roda, where you can also eat at the restaurant. Well, snack bar anyway.

Equipment: All equipment hire can be done at the base. All the places I skied in Italy had base facilities and I found them all very accommodating, especially when you put money in their hands!
The prices were all reasonable and the quality of equipment was good.

Getting there is half the fun

I'm on my way, to the top

This gives you some idea of what the northern side is like. You can access this area from the village of Fai della Paganella. The base station, Santel, is at 1088 metres and you have to take three chairs to the top at La Roda (2125 metres), thus giving you 1,037 vertical metres.
This shot is taken whilst on the second lift, Meriz-Dosso Larici and shows the distant summit of Paganella that you will eventually get to.
The top third is clear before you get to the lower slopes that have been cut through the trees. Excellent intermediate slopes with the only difficulty being the drastic change in light at times as you rapidly change from shade to bright sun around some corners. Very disconcerting at times.

    A clear day, great snow

Look ma, no skis. Sadly, my mother is long departed this earth (I tried to warn her old age would be fatal) so I can't send her this photo.
My friends however, have to suffer this and more!

Equipment: I'm situated about smack in the centre of the fields, near the Albe de Mezz-Cima Paganella lift on the Olimpica 3 slope.
It was somewhere below here I ploughed into someone of German origin, knocking him off his skis and damaging my thumb, still sore nearly two months later.

    Intermediate skiers paradise

So, off to Italy for a dash on the slopes? Well, if you are of intermediate or beginner level, this could be just the place you're looking for.
The main embarkation point is Andalo, which you may be able to discern if you blow up this map. It's at the centre of things and you can get to the top more quickly, starting with a cable car.
