    Walking in the forest

by mvtouring Updated May 31, 2009

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Walking in the forest can be a lovely experience, but remember that you must make sure that you have a map, warm clothing and something to drink with you. Also make sure that someone knows that you have gone hiking so that they can look for you in case of emergency.

I had my reservations when invited to take the last cable car to the top of a mountain in the middle of February then walk down in snow shoes as the sun went down.
I was pleasantly surprised to find it was actually great fun. About 20 of us went up with 2 alpine guides who took us into deep snow fields and down mountain tracks. We stopped at a small refuge on the way down where huge chunks of dark bread, cheese and sausage were all washed down with vino caldo, then on our way again. The guides gave a commentary all the way down(in Italian)and the entire trip took about 2 hours.
If you're ever in Madonna di Campiglio in winter, this is a must.

    bar suisse

Right in the centre of town is Piazza Righi, where you will find Bar Suisse. This is a great place to stop off after, during or before hitting the slopes. Try a bombardino, or cafe correto.
Sit out on the piazza and watch the world go. They have great pannini which always go down well with a cold beer. During the evenings, it gets packed.

    mogul skiing

During our Feb/March 2007 trip we were just in time for the World Cup freestyle skiing event.
Lasted for a week and we were lucky to get hold of 2 VIP passes for all the events. The opening ceremony was spectacular culminating in a massive firework display.
The skiers were incredible. I've never seen anything like it before and as just mesmorised by their skills.

    on top of the world

Skiing in Madonna di Campiglio is great fun. Plenty of intermediate runs and a few black runs.
There are several ski schools and kindergartens, and a world class snow park for boarders.
During the winter season, there are always international events to watch. When we were last there, we were given VIP tickets for the World cup freestyle championships.

The Grand Hapsburg Ball is held every February, recalling the days when Emperor Franz Josef and the Empress Sissi patronised Madonna di Campiglio. There is a full week of events leading up to this climax. Well worth a visit at this time of year.

When you get to Madonna di Campiglio, make sure that your first stop is the tourist office where you get yourself a map of the mountains and hikes. They have some lovely easy hikes that you can do in the Adamello-brenta natural park.
They suggest that you do not go alone on long and unfamiliar routes. Respect the environment, always take a backpack, a waterproof jacket, walking boots and a small first aid kit with you

    Madonna di Campiglio Ski Area

And just think, I never strapped on a pair of skis in my life before going off on this adventure. Let's just say that it took me 3 hours to get down the mountain, and I had bruises on my butt for weeks because I fell so many times. But I tell you what, the Italians helped me up many times and in some cases had to retrieve my skis which had fallen off.

Standing in the centre of the village, I am not sure if this has been erected for those that fell victim to the mountain or for those that conquered it.
