On the picture you can see in the background a glimpse of the Etsch/Adige valley where the road starts. There are 86 hairpin turns on the way from Prad to Bormio, half of them in the part the picture covers (most of them not seen on the pic, of course). The road is rather easy to do by car, in good weather a motorbike is clerarly the most attractive option - and you see always people doing the pass on bicycle, I even could spot a Tandem.
The road over the Stilfser Joch/Stelvio, one of the most famous high Alpine roads, was already built in 1825 to provide a strategically important connection between Tirol and Lombardia which was Austrian that time. It is a masterpiece in civil engineering and has more than 80 hairpin turns. It is much easier to drive than it might look from the distance. A real heaven for motorbikers (but I was driven in my friend's car).
