A considerable part of the way from Stein, the last settlement in the Pfitschertal near the end of the bus line connecting the valley with Sterzing can be done by car on a rough narrow and unpaved road. At about 1700 m above sea level the road is closed. From there onwards a partly steep but pleasant walk cuts off the turns of the many kilometers longer road and leads through forests and over Alpine Summer pastures up to the Pfitscherjoch. This path offers picturesque views both out along the valley and to the spectacular Hochfeiler, the highest peak of the Zillertal Alps.
It is not too often possible in the Alps to climb an over 3500 m high peak without any specific glacier equipment (but with perfect mountain equipment anyway, of course). Park the car at the 3rd hairpin turn of the road and follow the signs "Hochfeilerhuette" which is reached from there in 3 hours. It is recommended to stay over night there and to continue the next day up to the top of Hochfeiler on a not too difficult way, one does not even need to touch the rock with the hands. 3 hours from Hochfeilerhütte. Only in perfect and stable weather, of course!!!
From the parking at the end of the open part of the road a 3 hours hike leads to the Landshuter Europahuette, a lodge through which the Austrian-Italian frontier runs since 1919. I did not test how it feels maybe to sleep head in Austria and feet in Italy or the other way round but anyway from there one can continue, in principle always very close to the frontier slowly and slightly down to the Pfitscher Joch and from there back to the car. All the way a great panorama. We had liked to do it but we started too late.so we had to limit ourselves with a shorter hike.
For €8, you could rent a bike or mountain bike for half a day. Vipiteno and the surroundings are ideal of a bike ride.
When we were there, last June, we hired a bike and rode to Racines. Very easy, just follow the river. Worth the ride :)
Unfortunately I don't have the address of the Bike Hire but you will surely find it if you ask around.
45minutes away from Vipiteno, we have Jenesien, a small town, right above the city of Bolzano.
Jenesien is famous for the blonde horses and for riding. We paid about €18 pp for an hour horse riding in the woods.
Not to miss
We visited Vipiteno on Easter Sunday and we just walked around. It was magical with all the sweet shops displaying Easter eggs.
