Baptistry, 6th 7th century. Marble cladding 13th 14th century. Oldest building in Florence, possibly made of pilfered columns of the ancients.

Maybe not off the beaten path, but you may feel beaten after you climb the 400+ steps to the top of the Duomo--the view is well worth it. (When I was there, there was no fencing)

Piazza Porta Romana down via Seragli there is part of the Ancient Wall of Firenze, this used to once surround the city and much of it is still standing today
