I was in Florence, Italy, one month ago. A beautiful city with great shopping!
Particulary one shoe-shop that I just fell in love with!
Romano firenze, they have 5 shops in Florence, women and men shoes.
They have reosonable prices for the good quality shoes they have and a great sortiment with a lots of different styles. You can find everything from sandals, sneakers, elegant to fashionable shoes! They sell international brands like Fornarina, Miss 60, Diesel but also unknown italian brands for those who want to buy something they are sure they won't find at their friends feets when they come home.
Definitely a shop one that goes to Florence have to visit!
or you can also visit their web shop;
www.romanofirenze.com
What to buy: SHOES! what else?
They also have some really good looking bags!
What to pay: Well, the prices goes from 40 euro (sandals) up to 200 euro (leather boots)
And if spend more then 155 euro in the same shop on the same day you can ask to have Tax Free.

UPDATE 2006: When I was in Florence in the Spring I went to the above address and could not find the shop. There is some road construction being done on that street so it is possible he has moved at least temporarily to another location. I have written to him to find out his new address but have not heard from him. In the meantime, you could check out the other shoemaker whose shop is opposite the Church of Santo Spirito.
ORIGINAL POSTING:
Stefano Bemer's shoes are a work of art. Even though you may not be interested in having your shoes made (they cost well over $1500 a pair), you may want to pass by just to see what an Italian artisan can do with a piece of leather. The last time I was there, just for a look, he was making golf shoes for Japanese clientele.
Stefano is very nice.
What to buy: Custom made shoes.
What to pay: Minimum of $1900, according to another website.

You cannot possibly come to Florence and not buy at least one pair of shoes. There are so many beautiful boots and shoes here that to leave without buying a pair is almost sacreligious. Of course I speak as a woman who owns a closetful of shoes that I admit to never having worn. I simply can't resist them.
Please notice how simple and well laid out these windows are. Only in Italy have I seen windows so well done.

lots and lots of shoes, at reasonable prices. try not to grab the boxes yourself, the employees don't really like that, so have them help you out.
another smaller shoe store nearby is Sabatini, good small selection.
What to buy: i like shopping in florence so much better than milan.
san lorenzo market is good for all the souveneirs you need to bring back.
leather sketchbooks and albums.
