As you stare at this masterpiece, it is hard to believe that it began life as a hunk of stone! (And according to the legend, a stone that another sculptor had started but not finished.) Leave a Comment

See the copy of the David in the Piazza della Signoria. One of my absolute favourite works of Michelangelo is The David, which is a marble sculpture made between 1501 to 1504. The statue was commissioned for the cathedral of Florence, but the Florentine government decided to place it in front of the Palazzo Vecchio instead. The original is now in the Accademia, and a copy has been placed in the Piazza della Signoria. Spend time looking at the fine details in the David. Michelangelo is known to have done some (illegal) disecting and I think you can see so clearly that he knew how the viens and muscles were attached and how they worked - it is wonderful how he makes such details so clear and such a part of his work. .... just look at the fine details in this sculpture! Although some say the hands are too big. This amazing man - Michelangelo - was also a writer of poetry. His poem for Vittoria Colona is so beautiful. He really is the face of the Renaissance for me. Indeed there is good reason that people flock from all over the globe to see the famous David. Best if saved until the end, so you can truly appreciate the grandness and perfection of it. I was shocked by the sheer size of the work, and really speechless in the presence of such an incredibly beautiful thing.

Michelangelo's David in the Gallreia dell'Accademia. Sublime! There's nothing to compare with seeing it in real life. Also don't miss the other wonderful marble sculptures on display.

David is a must see in Florence. One is inside in a museum and the other one on the streets. Both looked exactly the same to me. Its a mammoth structure and as I stood in front of me...all the history classes I went through in my child hood went by my mind. I was really looking at something which I had studied. Its a different feeling. I went to a lot of Domes and Piazzas and ate a lot of icecream. Its was really good. Leave a Comment Directions: Opposite the Dumo

See David! This is a must even for those that don't take a keen interest in art. It really is remarkable. Make sure you make reservations for the Museum and try to do it early in the morning otherwise all you'll remember is the horrid wait!! Phone: 055 2388612
