Interior of Santa Croce and ceiling painting. by jon_and_may Santa Croce was an unexpected highlight of our trip to Florence. You don't really get a sense of how important this city is to the world until you see the tombs of some of the most influential people who ever lived. Dante, Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Galileo, and many more. It's a sombre and respectful atmosphere (it's a church afterall). One of things not to be missed are the extravagant paintings on the ceilings. Artists and architects designed their spaces to be full of art and detail, so remember to look around and absorb it all. Many tourists miss this which is a shame. Leave a Comment Directions: South-east of Piazza della Repubblica. About 5-10 minute walk.

It faces the square of Santa Croce which, on the other sides is lined by old palaces. In this square, during the Medici period, first the tournaments took place and later foot-ball matches. The Basilica is one of the largest churches in the city. The facade is a modern one (1863) and so is the bell-tower (1865) built in gothic style. The interior, in the shape of an Egyptian cross is divided into three aisles by octagonal pillars supporting pointed arches. Inside the Basilica, the most famous funeral monuments are along the walls of the right aisle, These include the monument to Dante Alighieri by Ricci; to Michelangelo, by Vasari ; to Alfieri, by Canova ; and to Machiavelli, by I. Spinazzi . Leave a Comment

by Polly74 Notice something unique on the top of the facade? A Star of David. The church contains funeral monuments of famous people in the world of art and culture: Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, Alfieri, Machiavelli, Dante Aligheri, Giuseppe Rossini, Foscolo, and many, many more. The floor is covered with old tombstones. There is no other place to walk other than stepping on the graves, so I fully expected to be hit lighting upon exiting the Basilica. Leave a Comment

by micajo Santa Croce, the church of the Franciscans in Florence, is one of the finest examples of Italian Gothic architecture. It was begun in 1294, possibly designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, and was finished in 1442, with the exception of the 19th-century Gothic Revival facade and campanile. On many of the interior walls are masterpieces of Tuscan Gotic or proto-Renaissance painting: the Bardi and Peruzzi chapels' frescoes are by Giotto; the Baroncelli Chapel has frescoes by Taddeo Gaddi. Many famous Italians are buried in the church: e.g. Leon Battista Alberti, Michelangelo, Vittorio Alfieri, Leonardo Bruni, Gioacchino Rossini and Galileo.

Santa Croce, Firenze by Andraf This beautiful Gothic church dating from the end of the 13th century contains the tombs of many famous Florentines, notably the tombs of Michelangelo, Galilei, Ghiberti and Machiavelli. The church also has an important collection of art which includes frescoes by Giotto and a stunning crucifix by Donatello. Pass through the courtyard to get to the Museo dell'Opera di Santa Croce to see the 13th century Triumphal Cross by Cimabue. The piazza in the front of the church is a good place for taking a break. Rest on the steps in front of Dante's statue and watch the world go by. Leave a Comment Address: Piazza Santa Croce

The Basilica di Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross) is the principal Franciscan [church]] in Florence, Italy, and a minor basilica of the Roman Catholic Church. It is situated on the Piazza di Santa Croce, about 800 metres south east of the Duomo. The site, when first chosen, was in marshland outside the city walls. It is the burial place of some of the most illustrious Italians, such as Michelangelo, Donatello, Galileo, Machiavelli, Foscolo, Gentile, Rossini, Marconi and Fermi, thus it is known also as the Pantheon of the Italian Glories (Tempio dell'Itale Glorie or Pantheon dell'Itale Glorie. This is one of the most splendid sites of Florence, where it is pleasant to stop and sit on the large and comfortable benches, to consult a guidebook, read the newspaper or simply observe the light of day as it plays on the facade of Santa Croce

Santa Croce-Piazza de Santa Croce by bpwillet The Basilica of Santa Croce, constructed in the Gothic style, is one of the largest churches in the city. It is attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio. He began working on the church in 1294 and it still continued through the 14th century. The church was not consecrated until 1443. The facade, by Niccolo Matas, dates to the 19th century and the campanile in Gothic style also dates to the same time period. The tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiaveli are along the interior nave. It is situated on a wide open plaza which holds a Christmas market in late December and a number of very fine restaurants along the exterior. Leave a Comment

Piazza San Croce and Entrance to San Croce by mydreamquest, 4 more photos On my third day in Florence, I had walked into Piazza San Croce with the Cathedral comfortably about with the statue of Dante to the left. It struck my attention because this gothic cathedral had a star that looked like a star of David above the front entrance. As I took this picture, two days later, I'd be surprised with the historical energy of past figures who lay here in peace. The entrance fee is around 8 Euro and for an extra 2 Euro you must get the audio guide with the very useful map. Careful review of this guide will tell you that the tombs of Michelangelo, Gioacchino Rossini (composer who wrote the "Barbers of Seville" opera), Ghiberti (the creator of the gates of paradise), Galileo Galilei (person who theorized that the earth was not the center of the universe or flat), and Niccolo Machiavelli. There is also a memorial for Dante and a seperate chapel for the Medici's. There was a peaceful sculpture in front of the Medici chapel which I was found of. The sculpture on Michelangelo's tomb has three women who symbolized his mastery of sculpture, architectue, and painting.
