Ay, yi yi! The Taxis are molto caro around here!!
OUCH! Everyone who lives in FLorence complains about having the most expensive taxis in Italy. Part of the problem is that the city is so smalland thus fares are elevated to compensate for the short-haul fares they get.
You cannot hail a taxi on the street.
You must go to a taxi stand OR call a taxi, the number os 055 4242 or 055 4390. Remember that the meter starts from the moment the taxi gets the call, so it is not unusual for him to arrive with 5 or 6 Euros already on the meter. There are also supplememntal charges for luggage and at night and on Sunday.
There is a 10 % reduction for ladies travelling at night in taxis, how easy it is to access this concession I cant tell you.
The service is overall excellent, but pricey.
Average cost for a taxi to the airport from the city center (no traffic) about 15 to 20 Euros. It takes about 15 minutes, it is only 7 KM to the ariport from the Duomo.
Red double - decker
This is a quite new entry in Florence transportation. The red double deckers travel the streets of Florence since 2003. I'ts quite a touristic thing , but if you don't have too much time, or if you travel with children, is maybe something interesting to know.Related to:

Buses in the city centre
The city centre has some narrow streets, and in my opinion it's best to visit the town on foot. But there are public transportations going everywhere all the time, so it's very easy to use them. I especially liked the small buses that cover the whole medieval centre.Related to:

I used the taxis in Firenze twice while I was there. Just to get to and from my B&B. They are a bit expensive, but if you have luggage with you and need to travel a bit of distance (I was going between my B&B, which was just on the other side of the River Arno, to the train station S.M Novella.), then it is an easy way to travel.
But I do suggest using taxis only when you really need them, as like I said, they can be expensive.Related to:

The principal public transportation netwrok within the city is run by the ATAF and Li-nea bus company, with tickets available at local tobacconists, bars and newspaper stalls.
Trenitalia runs trains between the railway stations within the city, and to other destinations around Italy and Europe. The central station, Santa Maria Novella Station, is located about 500 metres NW of Piazza del Duomo.
The centre of the city is closed to through-traffic, although buses, taxis and residents with appropriate permits are allowed in. Within the city walls places can easily be reached by foot
Livorno to Florence?
If you're one of the zillion people every year who cruise around the Mediterranean and have a layover stop in Livorno, you'll probably also be one of the zillion people who decide to spend the day in Florence.
Make an informed decision: by coming to Florence, you'll miss a great chance to eat some fine fish. By staying in Livorno, fish is almost all you'll get.
The best way to Florence is by train (about 12 euros round trip): the ride takes about one hour and a half (might have to change train in Pisa).
A limited bus service is also available.
Or you can hire a private limo/shuttle: I don't know much about this option, but there are rides taylor made for cruise ship passengers.Related to:

By Plane: Aeroporto di Firenze
Aeroporto di Firenze-Amerigo Vespucci (Florence-Amerigo Vespucci Airport).
Once you arrive in Florence by plane, I recommend to take the bus called Volainbus which, in about 20-25 minutes, will take you to the centre of the city. The bus station in Florence is opposite the railway station. From that place, all the main sights are within a walking distance (apart from where your accommodation is). The Tourism Office is also a few meters away.
It runs every 30 minutes:
A tiny two-seater is perfect to drive through narrow streets, and to park it just about anywhere you want.
Smart drivers are not very well considered by other drivers in Italy - they say they drive Smart as a motorbike -.
Anyway you will found lots of multi-coloured Smart in Florence.
If you want to experience Florence by car, or better if you want to visit the countryside, rental agencies are located around Borgo Ognissanti area.
Autoeurope (www.autoeurope.com) should be the cheapest one, but I'm not quite sure they have Smart car available.

I bring this tip for the buses that link Florence with the Airport and with other cities such as Siena. In this particular case, it's better to go to that city by bus rather than by train.
The Bus station is opposite the train station and a few meters away from one of the Tourism Office in Florence.
For the bus to the Airport:
This is the station where the buses to Siena leave from.
By Train: Stazione di Santa Maria Novella
Italy has an excellent train network. The railway station is in the city centre, from it, the most important sights of Florence are very close, and one of the Tourism Offices is in front of it, just crossing Piazza della Stazione.
By Car: How Far/How Long...?
Some road distances from Florence to:
- Rome: 285 kms.
- Paris (France): 1.146 kns.
- Warsaw (Poland): 1.570 kms.
- Madrid (Spain): 1.688 kms.
The website gives you some other road distances together with driving times and best routes.
