Lucca was my last stop on my trip through Mediterranean Europe in summer 2004. I left Italy by plane from Bologna Airport, which is located about 120 km northeast of Lucca.
Other airports, which are located even closer to Lucca include Pisa (20 km) and Florence (70 km).

The Pisa airport is just aobut 30-40 minutes by car away from Lucca. The Pisa Airport is very convenient and much easier to navigate than the larger airports like Rome or Milan. Fly into London and catch a flight with Ryan Air for a cheap flight to Pisa.

Lucca isn´t that big, if you just stay in between the medieval city wall.... The only useful motor vehicles are these lovely three wheels or vespas....

Lucca is a nightmare town with a car.
YOU MUST PARK OUTSIDE THE WALLS in the public parking areas.
The police are very strict.
The one-way streets are confusing.
There is literally no place to park unless you live there.
The tourist buses create havoc, AND walking is so much more fun.
We enjoyed the walk to and from our car (which was infrequent). It gave us an opportunity to see the walls of the ancient city from the outside again and again. It was also fun to use a different entrance each time we entered.
Note: The photograph is not mine. It was taken from a pamphlet that I had

Bring or rent a bicycle and tool around the entire perimeter of the old town wall. It takes quite a while, and it's a different way to see Lucca, actually many of the locals use bicycle to get around.

Lucca is quite easy to be reached by train from Florence and Pisa (and also straightly from Pisa Airport, while Florence Airport's railway link is now under construction). Florence and Pisa are easily reachable from every major Italian city by the fastest trains, while the trains that operate between Pisa-Lucca and Florence-Lucca are mostly local trains. On the other hand, if you stay in Lucca you can easily visit other major tourist areas as Florence, Pisa and Siena, and reach the Versilia sea (Viareggio), the Garfagnana mountains (Castelnuovo di Garfagnana), or the spas of Montecatini (on the way to Florence). In the following table we report approximate times and costs for these places, to give you some idea of Lucca's fair position.

Lucca is in a excellent position to reach easily many other places of world-class touristical fame. LAZZI bus company offer a good service to reach speedily the following places: Florence, Pisa, Viareggio (and Versilia sea), Gafagnana mountains, Montecatini's thermal baths. The service is usually reduced on holidays and Sunday. Passengers have to buy tickets in appropriate shops and box offices (and more outlets that display the company marking "F.lli LAZZI"). Tickets are not transferable and must be preserved throughout the journey. Passengers devoid of ticket must pay a fine.

Make sure you are not driving into the old city of Lucca on a day when there is a soccer game or antique market. The traffic jams that are created rival New York City or Los Angeles. You can waste hours in traffic, literally.
